Im having a tough time deciding what Laptop to buy, only because I cant decide which screen to get.
I see the Dell has a great new screen, but there has been word about color inaccuracies.

Can anyone tell me what they think is the best screen for image editing?

Properly calibrated, all laptop screens are still fairly poor. Basically, you have to chose from the best of the worst in this case, and xps16 is the best. Other good options are the rest of the studio xps line, and MBP. Can't talk for others, haven't seen them long enough to judge, but sony usually has good screens as well.

Yup, the workstations are good, but they only have the same screen as the studio xps 16 at about $400 more ;)

EDIT: +1 for external screen if you edit photos while at home/office, but if that was how you use the system, cheaper and better to get a decent desktop and a cheap laptop (if you need it).

Why not get an external screen?

I would love to get an external screen. However its not in my budget.
Just to get my laptop shipped here will be $300. I tied the supposed "Dell Reseller" here and you dont even want to know the prices.

Dunno why shipping is 300 for a laptop, my desktop+monitor was shipped for no cost at all.

In fact, http://configure.us.dell.com …s=19&kc=performance-deals (external link) (you should get the 2.53gh processor, 4gb ram, and RGBLED screen upgrades for a total of 1345) has free shipping, and the standard rate was only $30 anyway. You likely have to add tax though, so that's an extra 5-8% to the price.

EDIT: If 1345+tax is far out of your budget, don't worry about the screen, you won't find anything good anyway. A desktop would be the only solution.

I find the TrueLife™ LCD from Dell good enough for me. I have had a xps 1530 for almost 1,5 year. I tried a calibration tool on it (and it ended up with almost no difference in quality). Wich means that the factory seting must have been good. I friend of mine (a more devoted photographer than me) had his brand new Mac, and to my (and his) suprice there was very little difference in the quality (but a 100% difference in price). The Mac was bether, but not so good that i was experiencing mine as garbage. With the new WLED I gues the quality is even bether... I am no proffesional, and could only dream about buying the best thing out there. So I have to play with the second and third best alternative. But I get good enough colours on my Dell to do the basic editing on my pictures. I think a Dell computer with true Life is a good economy cind of Laptop for a Hobby photographer with a tight budget. You can get one for around 5-600 dollar in US, around 700 dollar (600 euro) in EU, so I guess the price in Africa should land on the same level. I will buy one (Studio 15 with Wled truelife screen, with 500GB, 4GB RAM, 500MB Graphic card for 580 euro) with WLED here in Austria this week for my wife, and will come back with my experience in a couple of weeks. If you have enough money, go and buy the best one... Probably a Mac. if you have a family to feed and have photography as a hobby, and need to put the priority on baby food, piano lections for the kids, new shoes for youre boy, vacation for the family etc... buy a Dell with truelife. If you are not sitting next to a guy with the 3000 dollar new Mac and are always comparing the quality, I think you will be totaly satisfied with what you get for the 500 dollar you spent on a Dell.

Living in Austria, I am so glad that there is stuff like Gimp out there...
I am a happy giver, so if you find any misspelling in my text, you can keep them... :)

profile said Illinois + Tanzania, how was i supposed to know which:rolleyes:

Tanzania does not have direct dell sales, so either you pay a lot more for it, or wait until you are in illinois again ;)
