It's 2020 (God help us) and you go to the camera store for a new camera

By 2020 the camera will be surgically implanted in our skulls and will take permanent images using our eyes as lenses, and our brains for processing. We'll have built-in USB ports to connect to a thumb drive or a printer...

This one is it. Almost.

Camera gear updates will be implants of some type. Long lenses will probably be glasses or a spectacle of some type. Crazy long lenses will be devices mounted to something other than ourselves with wireless connections (lens pools, shared security cameras, satellites, telescopes (like the Hubble)). Printing will be gone. It almost is now. Hand held devices will replace paper. Up links to hosting sites will be instant and I'd even bet the active billboards will be used to display things (you know, like the boards they had in the movie Blade Runner that everyone said would never become a reality but now they are everywhere). Everything will be wireless. Even power. Look at the wireless power test beds they have now. Amazing work. They are powering 60 watt light bulbs without wires across rooms now.

It's going to get crazy!

Will I be here in 2020 to see it? Not a chance. But if technology can make some huge leaps very soon I just might be able to last that long. I could use a couple of replacement parts right now...

We also need to find a way to stop an object in space from hitting us. Right now we are still in the "very" lucky category of the game. We also need to find a dependable way to get off of Earth. If we spread the human race out, we stand a much better chance of survival. Or maybe we are such an insignificant being we aren't meant to get off this rock and the distance away from everything else was part of the plan? Hmm...

And if we toss the whole aliens visited earth thing into the mix. What will happen in December of 2012? Does the world end? Do the aliens come back for another visit?

Jon.

You could have some of mine... but they are knackered:smile:

Thank you for the contribution. Blade Runner is my favourite movie, in fact, I think I might watch it tonight.

In 2020, after you land your flying car, you push a button (be CERTAIN to get OUT first) and it will collapse down to a Canon 5DmkXII. However, you'll have to still pay a WHOLE lot extra if you want L glass.

But seriously, I bet there will be more brick and mortar purchases because I'm sure the gov't (state and fed) will muck up mail order with taxes and other crap, thereby leveling the playing field.

2020 is so far away in technology years (like dog years, only faster), that there is little chance we can predict what will be available. I have it on good authority though, that Canon will have a "print" button on their cameras to print from camera directly to a printer . . .

I would like to see Medium Format sensors in Canon/Nikon SLRs. I know Leica makes one already but, I'd like to see these companies leap into this market.

The 50D does that already, although I can't imagine what possible use it is as most people edit their shots first.

What! There are still camera stores in 2020? Rents are expensive and it really doesn't make sense to have a store in every little town so it would be much cheaper to do the selling in a virtual store.

Will there be cameras? Most of the photography needs can probably be satisfied with a multifuntion device that takes care of different kinds of recordings and many other tasks.

There would be some geeks who think that the latest technology lacks character and they will instead use a Canon 400D (who wants to use such a big device?), several lenses (how impractical is that!?), memory cards (you mean images aren't usable and archived right after they have been taken?), RAW conversion (what! I have to adjust the photo to get what I saw?), archival in Adobe Lightroom (are you saying it doesn't automatically add most of the meta-data about subjects and locations) and then view the photos either on paper or screen (how clymsy!). And how do you record your best moments in virtual worlds with 400D?

To be honest I have no idea what it's going to be like in 2020 but I know that cameras can become totally different once the manufacturers really start to take advantage of the fact that a camera is a computer.

2020 whole world will be covered by Google's omnidirectional land cameras combined with satellite based cameras that render fully 3 dimensional view on every location on earth. I just go and open google maps, then go to any location I want at any time of day I like and just take a screenshot of the scenery.

Hell, I can even travel back in time on googles 24 hours long stream buffer what allows me to select the time of the day I want for the shot. Some people even use picture analysis softwares to automaticly get them screenshots of certain types of scenery and have automatic program to place their watermarks and upload the pictures to flickr.

...Then I wake up, drink glass of water and realize it was a bad dream.

High dynamic range, 12 stops. 8196 levels (not measly 4096 levels). ISO 51200. But using lossless compression so that 32MP RAW files are still 15GB in size, in spite of the higher resolution and levels and DR. Servo feedback AF verification and correction.
