IS is dead, long live ISO!!

If camera manufacturers listen to us even a little, high ISO will deliver clean noise free images. IS may not be dead, but will only be used to take pictures in a dark room lit by candlelight.

Think about it. If you could have a 5 stop ISO advantage, or a 5 stop IS advantage, which would you take? The whole concept of IS is to allow the shutter to stay open longer, which can lead to (subject) motion blur. The only disadvantage I see to high ISO is image noise (and subsequent lack of sharpness). If this can be addressed in the future, IS may indeed become obsolete.

even with today's advances in high ISO performance, there are sacrifices that are made. ie: take a look at ISO100 photos from a nikon D700.

i don't think it's a matter of manufacturers not listening, but more or less a point where were are pushing the limits of what CMOS is able to offer.

Do tell us... we are all in a fever of speculation... what is wrong with your current wife.

Needs a reboot.

You could have some of mine... but they are knackered:smile:

Thank you for the contribution. Blade Runner is my favourite movie, in fact, I think I might watch it tonight.

Did you watch Blade Runner? I wanted to watch it last night but the storm that rolled by yesterday took our power out until a few hours ago. It's the norm around here though...

Jon.

Yes - the directors cut. Isn't Ridley Scott a great director? Great film. I didn't make the connection before, but BR is set in 2019!

You will download all of your upgrades - legally or not.
Your current "hardware" will "transform" once you select a different option.
When you are done? it folds nicely into your pocket.

I'm really surprised (and perhaps a little disappointed) that no one has yet mentioned the distinct possibility that none of us will be here in 2020.

Cheerful thought for the day.

because it's like saying something without saying something. akin to saying, "why bother doing anything when we don't even know if our existence is real?"

not to get all zen on anyone, but if we're not here then we're not here. we can plan for the future and if the world ends in 2012 (;)), we won't be around to say, "all that planning for nothing, we didn't even make it that far!" what's the point of making a comment that has no point? :D

well, i dont think optics will change much (maybe lighter/smaller). bodies however will probably evolve into something smaller, faster, cleaner, etc.

imagine an iphone sized device that slips into the back of a 300mm f2.8L! :p live view, touch screen, etc. :p

^^ in addition, everytime you press the shutter, the pic gets stored wirelessly in a mega-terra-giga byte storage location!! (encrypted of course!) :D

how about a disc with layers of liquid nanocrystals that change optical properties depending on the charge applied to them which can instantaneously adapt to switch focal length and aperture when you dial them into a camera? let's say different base sizes like a lens body the size of a 50L for wide angle to short telephoto and then larger bodies for telephoto to supertelephoto to accomodate those focal lengths? i think it'd be pretty cool.. just don't ask me how to build it. ;)

Just because we can make slick digital cameras and loads of other stuff, doesn't give us the right to keep going for ever. An asteroid impact? A virus wipe-out? Still, at least we will be able to take a good shot of it!

On more serious note --

- Variable frame rate 40K frames/sec
- Variable capture options, from 'RAW' per frame to 'JPG' per frame; 2020 versions of compression on board
- IQ at the level of pro HD video in 2020
- Size: About the size of a 1D today
- Lenses: New technology, allowing pretty extreme zoom with good/excellent quality even in the corners; effective aperture fixed through the lengths ~f/4-f/22
- Optional optics for specialty use (similar to today's range)
- Storage: 100 GB commonplace; multiple slots for multiple cards; up to 1 TB on board memory
- WiFi or other wireless operation, and wireless IP transmission, with wireless backup

Also, a wifeless option.

;}

When can I get a camera like The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager used to capture holographic images?
