Just waiting on the year/day they release a 10-1200mm 1.2L IS lens.

That and internet/ftp upload to your website from the camera. Can you say instant money in the bank?

IS is dead, long live ISO!!

If camera manufacturers listen to us even a little, high ISO will deliver clean noise free images. IS may not be dead, but will only be used to take pictures in a dark room lit by candlelight.

Think about it. If you could have a 5 stop ISO advantage, or a 5 stop IS advantage, which would you take? The whole concept of IS is to allow the shutter to stay open longer, which can lead to (subject) motion blur. The only disadvantage I see to high ISO is image noise (and subsequent lack of sharpness). If this can be addressed in the future, IS may indeed become obsolete.

Agreed. With hypothetical, noise free ISOs in excess of, say, 100,000, you could take flashless indoor shots with shutter speeds so fast IS is not needed. Heck, one could even choose whatever f-stop you want for composition reasons alone without worrying about setting up a tripod for slow aperture / full DOF shots -- no need to shoot at f/2.8 and bokeh half your field when you don't want to, just to get a shake-free shot... then read about how lousy your lens is at fast apertures.

I would submit, however, that it is not the camera manufacturers that need to provide the world with 100,000 ISO sensors, rather some researcher toiling away in a university solid state physics lab that needs to step up to the plate and figure out how to make a massive breakthrough in CMOS quantum efficiency -- or invent a new sensor technology altogether.

Much higher ISOs so that IS can be a thing of the past (or it can be in-body of some form).

Lenses are no longer made of glass but rather extremely high quality plastic (just like eye glasses, but better) to reduce weight and cost. Using technology similar but improved to Canon's 'DO' lenses every lens is much smaller now.

Cameras and lenses are still similar physical size to SLRs but with sensor technology dirt cheap you can get your basic 50mp camera that can shoot ISO5-ISO102400 for $1000 (comparable to the price of P&S by today's standards... inflation has gone up)

This indeed might be 'the next step'. Changing the morphology of the solid state detector is a principle applied in X-ray radiation detection in solid state imagers for medical purposes as well. The concept has been around a while, the concept is not yet applied commercially that I am aware of.

Cool. A quick lookup on Wikipedia shows the idea behind this technology has been around for quite some time, thus I suspect there are some engineering practicalities that need to be worked out before we enjoy Tv=1/1000 shots by candlelight. Perhaps you have to lug around a dewar of liquid nitrogen or something.

...but I hope they (and others) keep working at it.

I honestly couldn't even begin to speculate on what our technology is going to look like in 2020, or any year beyond that for that matter. We are moving faster and faster everyday, yet we were supposed to have flying cars ten years ago.

Who knows?

Just because we can make slick digital cameras and loads of other stuff, doesn't give us the right to keep going for ever. An asteroid impact? A virus wipe-out? Still, at least we will be able to take a good shot of it!

And we'll definitely need good, high-quality, high-speed digital for that asteroid impact. Taking the time to develop and print a roll of film just won't cut it.

When can I get a camera like The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager used to capture holographic images?

It comes as an accessory to the personal flying car that we've been promised for so long.

Yes - the directors cut. Isn't Ridley Scott a great director? Great film. I didn't make the connection before, but BR is set in 2019!

2019? I didn't know or remember that. Not too far off eh? I like Ridley Scott movies. He did Legend too. The one with Tom Cruise and Mia Sara and Tim Curry. I still like that one too.

Jon.

I'm really surprised (and perhaps a little disappointed) that no one has yet mentioned the distinct possibility that none of us will be here in 2020.

Cheerful thought for the day.

Hold the show. That's what I meant when I mentioned December of 2012. The Aztec calendar ends. Rumor has it, everything ends with their calendar too. ;)

Jon.
