Hello all, took this in my backyard (Upstate NY) and unsure of what type of species of hopper it is. Anyone able to point me to a link or ID to help with my curiosity? Thank you in advance!

I've never seen a red instar before. I know that pink ones will occur. I'm guessing that it is a Carolina grasshopper. http://bugguide.net/node/view/68112/bgimage (external link) You can pretty much tell the species right off because of the deep notch in the pronotal crest. Of course, I am not an expert, so you may still want to submit it to www.bugguide.net (external link) for verification purposes. I know that they would be interested in it, as the color is not that common.

Congrats on getting that ID! I love bugguide, and use it as an excellent reference site.
