I bought the 50 1.4 a few weeks after buying my 450D with the kit lens from eBay.

Obviously I did not know how to check for the lens and it provided good pictures at the time.

However, I noticed that when I turn the focusing ring, it can turn to infinity but not all the way to other side. It stops at "1.5" and "3" meters or between the 5 and 10 ft markings.

It's definitely supposed to be able to turn all the way to .8meters right? (or 2.5ft)

If I really did get a bad copy, how should I go about repairing it? Does BHPhotoVideo or Adorama have a repair service?

You can take it to a local camera repair shop and see what they say, or you can send it to Canon Irvine or NJ and get a quote. If it is under warranty, it will be covered.

Wait...if you bought it from ebay you should be able to return it to the seller don't you, if not you can complain to Paypal if you paid with it.

I'm the 2nd owner and didn't come with anything but the lens and hood. I'll just do it with the Canon repair service...estimated $95 and shipping it to Jamesburg NJ about 40miles away. I'm kind of curious now. If it gets fixed, it'll be 2.5ft vs the 8ft that I was forced with.

I bought it a while ago..back in March. Not sure if I can still complain about it. I bought it when I didn't know any better about how to check for lens condition...ugh. Live and learn.

OK. $95 is not too bad. It will come back as good as new to you.

Canon 50/1.4 focusses down to 0.45m (1.5 ft). so better than you thought.

Wow, I'm getting excited! I was literally about to trade it for the 60mm 2.8 which isn't a bad lens but I was getting into portraits this Fall and I think the 50 is better suited for it.

sample pictures and we can lend you a hand.

it sounds like your lens is on AF mode and will stop focusing one way if the image comes in focus.

I'm assuming this is the reason why I have to step back A LOT. I hear people complaining about how the 50 is too long on a crop and is why I didn't think there was anything wrong with my 50's focusing.

Yep, 50mm being too long on a crop refers to how much you can get in the frame at once. It has nothing to do with the focusing distance. Personally, I love the 50mm length on my 40D and I think it's great for portraits.

OHHH I see now. I'm sending it to Canon tomorrow morning. I really hope it gets fixed and have a properly working 50 1.4. I had no desire to use it because I really had to step back so much just to be able to focus (about 8ft!).
