I think most people are nice unless people think their gear is way better because of zoom, megapixels, etc. then the person should respond in the same manner.

I don't react in a hostile way to peoples ignorance, I just talk to them on the same level and answer they basic question simply... I like it when someone has an interest and wants to know from you.
If someone is condescending to me when they know nothing I just don't react to them... no point in being rude.

After shooting a Wedding, while doing the proofing with the clients they said,

"Wow! That is one hell of a Camera! I'm going to have to get one of those! *Turns to the husband* -- Wouldn't it be cool to take photos like that?"

... :|

LOL! That's right there with mine. I hate it when people look at my pictures and say, "Wow, you must have a really good camera!"

Gee, I thought maybe it was *me*.

Grrrr.......

LOL...I love it when one of my real estate clients goes and buys the same set up I have and ends up calling me for a 'rush' shoot because they can't get theirs to take pictures like mine does. I've even heard 'something must be wrong with my camera because it doesn't take pictures like yours does and I have the same thing you do.'

The digital age has led people to think it's all the camera. It doesn't matter if you know how to use it. As a matter of fact, just set it on Auto and you will be able to take pictures just like me. And don't worry about software, you don't need that either. You can take your jpeg right off the camera and it will be perfect every time.

Tell them you're photographing that bear - and point to where the camera is pointed. When they say they can't see it, point right where the camera's pointing and ask them how they can NOT see it. You need to appear as convinced that you are seeing it as they are convinced it is not there. Then tell them to use a softer tone because the bear appears to be getting agitated by the talking. See how long you can keep it up. Snap the occasional photo along with a "did you see that???" in an astonished voice.

I bet you have *no* idea how well this works at Cade's Cove. LOL

And Neil's been know to tell them to put a caber where the sun doesn't shine. And he's big enough to help them do it.

And he calls me grumpy.

Its not the putting a caber where the sun doesn't shine that hurts - its the removal as far as I am led to believe!

Are you denying your grumpiness?:p

I was at the Omaha zoo with my 50D (gripped) and had my 150-500 on. I was in the aviary and had the camera slung on one shoulder instead of around my neck. I came around a corner and a middle aged woman was very visibly startled. She looked at me and put her hand on her chest and said "Oh my god, I thought you had a machine gun". How she thought I got a machine gun into the zoo or why I was casually walking around with it was a mystery to me.

Buying a good camera and thinking you will capture good photos is as naive as buying a sports car and thinking you are great driver. Just because you own the equipment it doesn't mean you know how to operate it.
