Well, if we're going to be titularly restrictive, the silliest thing that I've heard someone say about photography is...

...anything said by dear old Ken! The man is a veritable fountain of guffaw-inspiring comments!

May I be so bold as to refer you (andf others) to this. The silly is on the page (well it caused my to chuckle).

Well, at least I can take some heart in that Chase Jarvis and I share a similar taste in ballheads (although mine is an RC4 rather than an RC2):)!

Ah, but don't paragraphs like this inspire you with the brilliant insights offered:)?:

Tripods are no longer required, and actually often degrade sharpness, because shutter speeds have climbed and IS and VR lenses (external link) reduced the need for slower speeds.

Tony,,I'd love to see Mr Rockwell use an EF 800mm f/5.6 without a tripod or a night scene at 30 seconds..

Honestly, this guy:rolleyes:

BTW,, talking about morons;)

A few months ago I was out shooting street candids with my 50D+grip/135L.. I dropped into one of my favourite cafes for an espresso, placed my camera on the table infront of me.. The owner's daughter came over for a chat, I'm a regular..

Three backpacker types walked in and one of them noticed my gear.. The conversation went as followed..

Backpacker: "Why would anyone want to travel around with a camera that big?"

Me: "How do you know I'm travelling around?"

Backpacker: "Why would anyone choose to live in a sh!thole like this?"

Me: Totally silent..

BTW,, the backpackers never did get served and walked out probably thirsty..

Heh! At least he did in a couple points in that "article" mention having a tripod handy for some night shots, but all his sample night shots were hand-held at pretty slow shutter speeds like 1/8, 1/4 sec and such. He made a big deal out of IS, and added that it's good to shoot several to try to get one good one.

All of which is well and good, but it gives me the impression that he has not done a ton of "serious" landscape/scenic work for serious print purposes...

I doubt he's done any serious photography, period!!

Heh! Well, I've done plenty of hand-held low-light shooting and I do value IS lenses so I can see where someone can get a "perspective" about such things, but as we know, KR tends to come off over the top and so silly. And, to discourage people from using a tripod is to me counterproductive when you can just help people to understand when and if a tripod is useful.
