I have OSX ver. 10.5.8 and preview ver. 4.2

How do I get preview to work with my RAW files from my 5D II?

Thanks in advance!

Easy answer, get LR2 or something like it. 10.5.8 supports 5dmkii RAW files, but at this time will not support sRAW previews. You need to use canon's zoom browser/dpp or a third party alternative.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Have a read here. 5Dii raw (but not sraw) OS X support comes with Aperture or iPhoto 09.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Ok it was sraw. Thanks.

One more q.

What is the biggest size you can print with sraw 1 and 2? (abouts)

As large or as small as you want. If you like to look at prints from about two inches away, the larger sRaw (11mp) should be enough for between 8x12 and 12x18, and the smaller raw (6mp) should be fine for between 4x6 and 8x12. You can easily print bigger if you don't expect to view it from that close.

I didnt think it mattered if it was small Raw or full size Raw? They're both the same file type? in terms of opening the files anyway... Is it a weird Mac thing? :) :P Mind you I dont use any Raw previews..

Theres lots of things I"ve noticed that are different now that we have our 5DII..

A bunch of Canon bits and pieces.

It's a Canon thing. Apple has to reverse engineer to decode the data as I think that Canon does not release the format due to intellectual property issues.

Here (external link) is an explanation of the cr2 and sraw formats.

Everything should be clear now. ;) ;)

If it's a Canon thing, then Apple would not be the only company producing RAW editors that has issues with sRAW. LR2 has had it for well over a year, Bibble wouldn't have had it for nearly a year and a half, nor would have plenty of others. Apple is dragging their feet, regardless of what Canon is doing to help or not help. This reason alone would be enough to look into LR2 over aperture, since not having sRAW support means that other new features may also never be supported in a timely basis.

The only solution to this issue is to not use Apple products for sRAW until they offer a free update to read the information. You can try to go the DNG way as well, but that is often quite annoying when you need to convert hundreds of photos from several memory cards. You can find Adobe's DNG converter here (external link), but be sure to read the limitations of this method here (external link).

EDIT: And that's an interesting read wlescall, seems like you can output sRAWs though component video cables if needed ;) Has absolutely nothing to do with why Apple doesn't have sRAW support, and in fact gives another reason why you should think that it's time to move away from Aperture... If these guys can get this far and it's not even their job, then Apple software engineers are doing something horribly wrong, or worse yet, nothing at all.

I was under the impression that sRAW1 and sRAW2 are still closed specifications by Canon and has only been made available to software companies via licensing.

I'm sure Apple could reverse engineer it to make the decoder/interpreter, but I think it would violate some sort of copyright or patent on the sRAW1 and sRAW2 formats.

I'm hoping that recently Apple has been dedicating most of their software resources into Snow Leopard. They also just updated their other pro apps and I'm hoping that Aperture is next.

To be honest, I don't use sraw; so it is a non issue for me. Aperture is my main use because Lightroom's adjustment brush was too slow initially and Aperture was making use of the graphics card for assistance in processing. I have some galleries in each program (I'm feeling schizophrenic like booting XP or Ubuntu in Fusion  ) but currently I'm leaning towards Lightroom.
