Yet I took pictures of them. I will admit they're..interesting. But I can't look at them without thinking one's crawling on me.

your second picture looks like it is a banana spider.
here is one of a banana spider i took in Jamaica last year.
they are all over the place in the usa at least where it is nice and warm.
they are pretty big too :)
they usullay hang/sit with the head down in the net and wait for food.
