Can anyone confirm that you can use a Cactus V4 receiver to fire a standard studio strobe as well? I assume it has some other output besides the hotshoe for firing a flash but I'm not sure.

Thank you. I'm probably getting way ahead of myself but I was considering instead of buying a stand/umbrella combo for my flash I would just buy a Calemut kit and a flash adapter for the stand and have an A/C strobe for home and a flash for remote work. Of course, since I haven't taken a single off camera flash shot yet, like I said, probably getting ahead of myself.

If you have at least 2 flashes, then get two umbrellas and stands with the wireless trigger and practice on those.. then when you know what you are doing, get the Calumet strobes and you can still use all the stuff you already have.

Sound advice... Thank you. Can you recommend some budget stand/umbrella kits that won't break the bank but also won't fall over at the slightest breeze?

I don't know your budget, but here goes, your choice:

1. This is all-in-one complete for the budget, you can learn with this and change the umbrella to bigger size later,
the 8ft air-cushioned light stand is good for flash and also good for strobes later $99
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …rella_Mount.html#features (external link)

2. Impact Air-cushioned Heavy Duty 9.5ft $38.95 each
(This will hold any flash and umbrella and also any strobes and softbox very well, when you are ready).
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …ned_Heavy_Duty_Light.html (external link)

3. This is also Impact 6ft not air-cushioned and lighter than the above, but will hold any flash and umbrella very well. ($19.99)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …5_Light_Stand_Black_.html (external link)

4. This is Impact 45" Umbrella for both reflective and shoot-thru $14.95
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …rella_Mount.html#features (external link)

5. Impact Umbrella Bracket $13.99
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …117_Umbrella_Bracket.html (external link)

6. And if you need a Flash Softbox, here is a complete setup on ebay (softbox and speedring set) $39.99

7. And lastly, get a wireless trigger, one of this:

CTR-301P - about $40 for 1 Transmitter and 2 Receivers on ebay. (I have this -2 Transmitter and 4 Receivers, and it has served me very well)
http://cgi.ebay.com …ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (external link)

Cactus v4 - ( I had Cactus v2, and it's also nice when I mod the antenna on the Transmitter, but I heard the Cactus v4 is really good.

If your money is really tight, go for the first option and one of the wireless trigger, you will like it.
Hope the above helps.

Mufutau: Your recommendations look really good. I might get some of the kits myself. Would you recommend the new Yongnuo RF602 trigger kits? The flickr strobist discussion only mentions good things about it: 2.4GHz wireless, well built, and multi-function.

I do no have or tested that, but some seems to think it's good especially if they can use it as wireless trigger and shutter trigger.. but I cannot really comment on that piece of equipment until I have seen more reviews and actual field use. But yes, the good thing about it is the 2.4GHz mode, it will surely be reasonable than the 433MHz we have been getting with other wireless triggers, time will tell. I am looking at it closely too.

The only reason I mentioned studio earlier is if I get a two light Calemut kit it comes with stands and umbrellas. So in theory if you can say those stands and umbrellas have around a $100 value, that makes a Calemut 2 light kit look like $269 instead of $369. If I buy the stands and umbrellas now and then pay for just the strobes later, that's $338 for just the strobes and if I've already paid $100 for shorter stands and smaller umbrellas, I've just paid $438 for an overall inferior setup than just springing for the Calemuts. I have analysis paralysis.

Then it will be beneficial and economical to you to just save enough for the Calumet Genesis Kit. That should be very good. Keep saving, you are almost there.
