I am retired and know (central) London pretty well having lived in Gower Street in my student days - so it is a matter of eliminating options and locations. While asking questions and going through the theatre district I was talking to some mates in the US on my amateur radio station and checking the POTN site every five or ten minutes.

I'll be gone for the rest of the day so I'll leave it open to any takers. If no one posts I'll put a new WAIN on at 0500 UTC.

It's the same actually Greenwich Mean Time is the old name for the Coordinated Universal Time of today. There is a funny story about that:

wikipedia wrote:
Coordinated Universal Time is abbreviated UTC. The International Telecommunication Union wanted Coordinated Universal Time to have a single abbreviation for all languages. English speakers and French speakers each wanted the initials of their respective language's terms to be used internationally: "CUT" for "coordinated universal time" and "TUC" for "temps universel coordonné". This resulted in the final compromise of using "UTC".[5]

I wouldn't exactly call GMT the old name. You will find that it is still in widespread use all over the world - even at the foot of this page it states 'All times are GMT'!

I'll stick with Zulu time :-)

Why they felt the need to add UTC instead of simply updating the GMT standard is beyond me....

OG out :-)

Monty, probably the same reason they had to compromise on the abbreviation... :) Greenwich is too "British Empire".

Well, as no one else posted: Here is your new WAIN...
