I'm sure it's been discussed on here before but why is it so hard to find frames to fit digital photos? I recently had several 8x12's printed (because I didn't want them cropped) and it has been almost impossible to find frames. It's not like digital photography is something new. I finally found 2 at an art store but it's just an 8x12 opening (no mat). I saw one other matted frame but it was quite pricey and looked cheap. Even the local camera places only carry 8x10 and 11x14, etc. I know I could just go out and get a bigger frame but then I can't find a mat to bring it down to 8x12 and have to go with a custom one which costs more money. *sigh*

Digital frames? This is an issue with 35mm film as well (both are 2:3 aspect ratio). I just shoot planning to crop since no one carries 8x12 frames. Its unfortunate, because 4:5 (8x10) format really cuts the long side down.

Here's a frame site- I have only heard good things about them, but not had any personal experience...yet...:

And, here's an eBay site for mats...I have had wonderful experiences with them! I haven't ordered from them in a while, but check their store for different sizes or for custom orders (they used to do custom cuts):

good luck in your search!!

Thanks for all the replies. There is a place in Canada I can order from 'matshop.ca' (I believe) but given that digital has been out for quite a while now I don't like the thoughts of having to order something that I should be able to go to the store and buy. Maybe in another couple years I won't have to drive all over the city to try and find one.

Again, digital has nothing to do with it. You just didn't see that they were cropping your photos when you turned in your roll of fill and asked for 8x10's.

Don't expect 8x12 to become a standard anytime soon.

Not that this will help but, I went to a Kohls store recently and noticed they were stocking some unusual sized frames. 17 X 14.5 for instance matted for 10 X13. I don't know why they came up with those dimensions, but maybe it's a sign of things to come. BTW Adorama stocks this same brand of frames, North American Enclosures.

Discount and Bankrupt stock shops are a very good source of cheap frames. I always buy at least a size larger than the image I intend to use and cut a mat to suit. That way non-standard sizes are not a problem.

As an example, I have an A2 antique pine frame sat here with a price tag of £5.99. They do very good business at that price.

You're right. With the film pics I never knew what I was going to get until I opened up the envelope. Now I can see the picture I took and when I uploaded it it really didn't match what I took. Amazing how far technology has come. But you would think that since people can see that the picture they took isn't the enlargement they get that it would create some sort of demand for the proper sized frames. I might just have to invest in a mat cutter and make whatever size mat I want so that I can fit them in the 'traditional sized' frames.
