So I know this girl who's always used Nikon. (always being the last two years she's picked up a camera) Her Dad is a photographer and he lives in Africa. She is currently there with him and he bought her a Nikon D300 before she came. Need I point out that, that is already an amazing camera for a 16 year old kid to have. Anyway, she lets me know today that he bought her a 1D Mark III. I was speechless.

I want my Dad to buy me things like that, hahah.

A snapshot taken with a $4000 camera is no better than a snapshot taken with a disposable.

If she has the chops to match what the gear can do then more power to her. If not, then she'd dragging around a lot of weight for nothing.

Personally, worrying about what other Mommies and Daddies buy their kids isn't worth wasting spit.

I wish my Dad would by me stuff like that too, but he won't. So I save up and buy if for myself. :) Really, I wouldn't worry about what gear others have. It's more about what you can do with the gear you do have.

Yes, yes I know. It's just frustrating sometimes. I mean, I don't even have the money to buy new lenses let alone camera bodies like that. I wish I did but I have to work for the things that I want. I think kids that just get things like that don't appreciate it as much as someone like me would. She just sees it as another camera to add to her collection. I see it as gold!

But you are so right, you have to be able to back up the gear that you have otherwise you'll just look ridiculous.

NOTE TO THE HUMOR CHALLENGED: THIS POST IS INTENDED TO ILLICIT A LAUGH AND/OR A GIGGLE FROM THE OP. IT IS NOT INTENDED IN ANY WAY TO CONVEY A WISH THAT THE CHILD IN QUESTION SHOULD GROW UP IN ANY FASHION OTHER THAN HAPPY, HEALTHY AND SUCCESSFUL. THANK YOU.

Are you saying 1D Mark III's lead to alcoholism and drug addiction? I might have to be careful.

I already have the four kids, though the 1D Mark III had nothing to do with that. The wife and I finally figured it out so that one is solved.

Different people react differently. YMMV...

Parents today...won't discipline kids, will buy affection with material items to offset the lack of time spent with family.

My wife the kindergarten teacher now sees all too many coddled, undisciplined kids because parents will not teach their children about responding to someone in authority, or paying attention. Every boss in the world has a boss they report to! (unless a dictator) and that is not being taught. Parents make every excuse in the world for their kids, rather than parenting their kids. The kids will suffer in the end, for the lack of parenting.

(stepping down from soapbox...I threw up at reading the OP)

Damn, a whole lot of judgement in this thread.

So we have concluded that this 16 year old girl:

Is a snapshooter, not a photographer
Will end up a fat housewife with 4 kids and a drug problem
Is not disciplines and spoiled

Anyone ever think maybe she has some talent that her father recognizes and wants to cultivate? Maybe her father just wants to share his life's passion with her? And If he has the means, than who cares? There are people for which the price of a 1Dmk3 is like the price of a kodak disposable for me. What's it matter. I bet she has a nicer car than me too, and more money in her wallet.
