Just got a 5DII and am thoroughly confused by video! Reading this thread has probably confused me more, but what I gather is I need to first encode the 'raw' footage taken before I can import into Premiere? Will there be a loss of quality involved here?

Also, when opening Premiere, I can't find a 1080p setting for the sequence box, only 1080i. Are there a list of settings I could use to make a new sequence for the 5D footage?

Any help would be really appreciated!

As someone who's used both Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and Final Cut Pro, I feel I am qualified to compare them directly... and the verdict is: tie. They're about the same, aside from a few details.

What do I use on a day-to-day basis? Premiere, but that's mainly because I'm a PC. If I was a Mac, I might use FCP.

Do you find one interface and workflow within the interface and menus etc, easier than another? I haven't only "dabbled" with both, never done anything other than just click stuff and I feel FCP and the "Mac" software is usually more user friendly, would that be the case here?

Premiere seems more intuitive to me, but that's probably because I've been using Premiere much longer than FCP. I guess someone just starting out would find FCP more user-friendly, like most Mac software.

Yeah thats what I'm asking, obviously if you've been using something for a while, its going to be more familiar to you than something new...but all things equal, new to both formats, I would venture to guess that the Mac software is a bit more user friendly...

All depends on what you consider user friendly. I personally find Premiere just about right since it reminds me of photoshop

EDIT: And if you want easy, LR2 or Windows Movie Maker. Those are easy, and make iCrap look like, well, crap ;)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Again, you're comparing it to your familiarity of photoshop...so yeah its going to be better for you...someone who's never used any of that, anything would find the Mac software like iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and maybe even FCE or FCP to be a little easier than the Adobe stuff. I would imagine.

LR2? Lightroom 2? And Windows Movie Maker compared to FCE/FCP? Seriously.
I was just trying to say that Apple's Mac software is usually in general more user friendly for noobs...not you experts who know software...just in general with folks new to the stuff.

You don't have to agree.

GPU accelerated decoding means people don't need to re-encode. And user friendliness of WMM is better than FCP because FCP has too many options ;)

Where were we talking about GPU accelerated decoding? Which program has this?
I also don't think, again, its fair to compare WMM to FCP, two different levels of video editing; and actually don't think WMM allows you to actually "edit" video, does it?
