In case you've never seen what lightning can do to a network card when it pretty much takes a direct hit, take a look at these. This network card was in the computer my co-worker's father. Needless to say, he ended up getting a new PC....

I have a nice new surge protector myself, after lightening took out my router & system board after coming in on my DSL line. Guess what 1 thing I didn't have on a surge protector? It apparently took out DSL at the street and then came in my house. It took AT&T 5 days to get my internet back up. My friend's dad ended up getting a laptop to replace his desktop.

I'm not sure even a surge protector would cope with a lightning strike!

Shocking thread....

1. Use a surge protector.
2. Switch off PC (via surge protector) when not in use. UNPLUG it.
3. Run your modem cable into the surge protector so it gets switched off as well as power cables.
4. NEVER leave your USB lead in the camera after downloading images.
5. Always turn PC off in storm.
6. Drink lots of red wine.

Good thread showing the actual damage.

I have had a modem fried because of lightening hitting the phone line on the pole outside, it ran down the line, through the phone line into the house and up into where the phone line and adsl plugs go, then it went into the modem.

ALL pc equipment was switched off and unplugged (literally just a few minutes before it happened - and I hasten to add, all plugs were and still are in a surge protector) I was looking out the window and saw it happen - there was a huge flash from the telephone pole and a massive bang.

Now, I always unplug the modem line from the telephone junction, thats the only way to be 100% certain the modem wont get burnt out.

Oh dude, that sucks!

But awesome shots... ;)

If you saw a man drowning and you could either save him or photograph the event...what lens would you use?
