Now that HDR has moved from a trend to a proven technique...at least in many professional's opinion...I'm curious what exciting new trends you see emerging in photography and/or post-processing?

I don't think that HDR has moved from a trend to anything quite yet, judging by the amount of hideously processed HDR images that are frequently lauded as 'awesome' on sites such as Flickr.

Maybe a future trend could be the repair and restoration of images destroyed by HDR.

Oh man - I have to agree with you there!

So apart from HDR, what new work are you guys seeing lately that makes you say, "Man - I wish I'd shot that!" ?

How about light painting? I know it's been around for a long while, but it seems like lately I see it more and more often.

you sir, have apparently never shot interior architecture! :p

I know of a few architectural photographers who are using photomatix to deal with large interiors that have a variety of dark nooks and crannies, blindingly bright windows, and no way to conceal the studio strobes they'd otherwise be using as fill/to bring the room exposure to the same level as the window exposure. When not used absurdly, HDR will let you "have it all" in terms of shadow detail and highlight detail under very difficult circumstances. Which, when you're getting paid and have to find a way to make the photograph happen, is nice.

I was referring to hideously processed HDR images, not HDR in itself. ;-)a

I actually think the funniest HDR's are the ones that are made of scenes with a narrow enough subject brightness range that a single exposure can express the whole range of tonalities... they look just like normal photographs. :p

I know what you mean though, hyper-saturation and weird halos all over the place... sometimes done with images that aren't even in register with one another...

Yes, I'm on about the ones that look like an LSD trip!

I often wonder about the ones where a single non-HDR exposure would suffice though. People must really like the HDR effect!

If they're done realistically, and well, most people would think they were a single exposure.

This scene got crushed in a single exposure. Lots of blown highlights and black shadows. But it looks pretty good with 3 exposures and some realistic HDR tonemapping.

In the end, most people probably can't tell whether the above shot was 1 exposure or 3 as HDR.

thank goodness, I thought I was the only one keeping my mouth shut upon seeing those. You'd think the entire world looked like a 1970s album cover; or maybe it's that everyone sees it like that but a few of us!

HDR is here to stay, and has great potential, but it is still in the trendy stage for many who haven't quite figured out how to use it effectively.

This is what I was thinking as well- and I actually just did a blog post on light painting.
