Generally speaking, is buying a factory refurbished camera a good choice?

Can you be more specific? What camera and at what price?

I personally has nothing against refurb. Normally it is cheaper and went through the same quality control.

P.S. Working for furniture business I can tell that some things are better repaired than came out of factory :)

I bought a refurb 50D - looks just like new. Plus, I have the peace of mind in knowing that it has been checked out by Canon Service. I'd do it again... I saved $200.

Since I was immediately having the camera cracked open, and modified there was no sense in paying extra for a factory warranty that I would immediately void!

It's a 30D for 565.00.

*good to know about the furniture* :)

I just sold a 30D that was like new on e-Bay for $400. I think you can do better than that deal. Just my opinion...

it is a very good choice. adorama has 1 year warranties on their refurbed stuff, plus if you go thru bing.com you can get 6% back.

Really depends on how lucky you are. Retail outlets have about a 10% QC rate at the max. Referbs have a 100% hand tested QC rate. However referbs also have a 100% return history rate. That is why they are referbs. You can buy one retail and have a problem or buy a referb and never have a problem. Or the opposite.

This does nothing to clear it up I know. But in truth there is no clear answer. It really does come down to luck.

Id buy refurb, but if you can find a reputable seller on here I'd do that. You can find a 30d for under 500 on here. :)

Yeah, you can find 30D for better price.
This is why mine is not going for sale when I get a new FF body (sigh)

PS
you may not believe, but the factories count how many nails need to go to one piece of furniture.

I just bought my 50d with 28-135 from Adorama, both refurbish for $1100 2 weeks ago. The camera came ABSOLUTELY mint with 1650 clicks.

I dont think I'll ever buy new.

Factory refurbished units are a great way to get equipment and keep money in your own pocket. :)

Got two factory refurbs in recent months, a Nikon Coolpix P80 and a Canon Digital Rebel XTi. Each cost half of the price of a new unit and performed just as well as new.

I bought my 50D refurbished from Adorama a couple months ago. 181 clicks and it appeared brand new. I was a bit hesitant at first due to a previous bad experience buying refurbished (not photography or Adorama related) but after reading a slew of positive comments here took the plunge. I definitely don't regret saving $200, and recommend going that route.
