I've had a 35L for about 10 months. It wasn't in a great shape. Focusring hardly working anymore.
The autofocus of this lens was spot on and it was sharp wideopen. Used it at 1.4 or 1.6 a lot of the time. Rocksolid performance.

I recently had the chanche to buy (second hand) a copy in perfect looking shape, with a working smooth focusring so I sold my 35L for the newer one. Repairing the old one would have been a lot more expensive.

The 35L I have now is behaving very strange.
Mainly from f1.4 to f1.8 there are big problems.
The AF is ok when I am close focussing:

(sharpened)

A few steps back and it backfocusses... or frontfocusses... or is ok. You just have to be lucky. I did hundreds of test shots (also on a tripod).
Microadjustments don't help, because it's unpredictable behaviour.
It's also A LOT softer.

I must have a really bad copy  The seller seems to have disappeared from the earth.

100% crop at f1.4 (when it focusses correctly, or manual):

Look at the difference in sharpness and detail!

I'm going to contact canon, but I'm questioning if this can be fixed without being super expensive.

That is bad news. I'm guessing it's not within canons warranty anymore.

Yeah that's too bad, cost of calibration in the US is about $180. I always remind myself to buy a used lens with warranty.

Nikon/Fuji.
Gear is important but skills are very important :)

If it's within 2 months of warranty, it's considered their grace period - so technically the warranty is 14 months, in case you didn't know.

Absolutly call them or send it in. I have had 1 body and 1 lens that were both just out of warrenty and they fixed both no charge.

The lens is 15 months old. They probably won't repair it for free.
Another sad thing is that the main repaircenter over here recently went broke. There is a new repaircenter now, but most of the people have to wait months for their repaired gear. :(

the $180 is inconvenient but relatively cheap considering this lens retails for $1479 and you are guaranteed a functional sharp copy.

If they can fix this with only calibration... It's not just front- or backfocusing, it's really soft, even with manual focus. The halos around the edges are so ugly. From F2-F2.2 everything seems to be fine. Very strange.

Sell it on Ebay with the specific details about calibration or repair being needed and include pics/examples. Set a reserve price for what you feel comfortable with and call it a day.

Are you sure your body is on one shot and not AI Servo?

Very sure ;)

It's not user error... Did hundreds of tests (with and without tripod) and I've had a good 35L for months, so I already knew how it should behave.
