Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D

If a new one comes out and you really want it, just sell the current one. I love my 1.4. I know there is alot of commentary on this lens (softness, AF, micro USM). Perhaps a used one makes sense so you know its sharp and has no problems historically. (Canon) at f/2.8 it outresolves the sensor all across the frame. It has slightly more barrel distortion than the 50 1.8, but its really not noticable in real world shots. Plus it can easily be corrected in PS "Shooting the 5D is like shooting a view camera: its a pain, but the results are why you do it." - Ken Rockwell :p
