Nice shot maybe a little more space on the left from end of wing to picture edge and run noise reduction on it.

I don't feel like I ever get a real sharp picture of birds, flowers or anything else that is small. I don't know what else to do.

Get closer....the closer you are, the less you have to crop the more detail is retained. I shoot most of my Hummingbirds at minimum focus distance which is around 11'....and I want to get closer then that but I need to get extension tubes for my lens.

Considering how much it's cropped there is some excellent detail though...maybe a bit underexposed.

Agree, I would get closer or get a longer lens. A teleconverter would work well on your 70-200 as well.

I kind of like the full frame shot. Especially the three or four step depth of view. Nice shot. :)

Your camera metered off of a lighter area in the picture and then set the shutter speed at 1/3200. 1/2500 would have been a better exposure for the bird. Manual exposure may have worked better. If this is an area like your back yard get a chair and get closer, sit real still and wait for them.
You can get closer. If your real serious you could get a chair blind. Some of the hunting stores have them. I used one with this shot and got inside of 8 feet. This was taken with my 100mm 2.8 macro, no cropping. I have a 400mm lens which I use mainly and have recently bought the 70-200 and really want to give it a try on hummers. Unfortunately no hummers this year in our yard. last year they showed up Sept.
