I'm not sure if this has been suggested before, and of course I expect there are loads of reasons why it wouldn't be practical to implement, but I think it would be a nice idea if we could give a rating or a favourite award to photographs posted on POTN.

It would serve a purpose in allowing members to track subjects via their favourited photographs list, but also it would give the contributing members some extra recognition for their uploads.

I have just been reading through a thread in the lighting forum and there are some great photographs in there that I would loved to have favourited or rated, to show my appreciation, without having to interrupt the flow of the thread by posting a comment, in this case months after the photograph was posted.

There migth be something like that in the future. No promises though.

However in my opinion ratings does not really mean much if it is not accompanied with comments. For example on a danish forum it is possible to both comment and rate a photo. The rating can be done without comments which means a lot of photos get 1 camera out of 5 possible with no comments at all. And the same for the opposite many photos get 5 out of 5 with no explanations. Those that do this often do not say why the photos sucks so badly that it only deserves 1 camera or why it is so fantastic that it must have 5. Many of the photos that have been given 5 I would not rate higher than 3,5 - 4.

Yes, I see the potential downfall of a ratings feature discouraging comments, but I thought it might be good to give the more lazy viewers an easy opportunity to show some appreciation!
