1001 free photography tips that you might be able to do without. But then again....

OK. 1001 tips for anything to do with photography. Unlike the 'un-cool' thread this one is serious (famous last words).

You are invited to contribute any tip that you think may be useful to other photographers. It could be a camera technique, a great short-cut in Photoshop such as " CTRL' toggles the composition grid" (there's one already!), shooting techniques, tips on selling your work (ha!), tips on interacting with models... anything at all so long as it might be useful to others.

I have added a few items to kick things off.

RULES!!!

1. No going off down Tangent Avenue.
2. Use brevity (that means few words). The idea is that people new to the thread can quickly scan through picking out what they need. No essays, polemics, internecine war-fare, or your life history. If anyone does, I shall mail them a poster print of my mother-in-law.:)
3. Please do not start discussions about someone else's post. We want to keep it tight. If you disagree with the tip, formulate your own modified version and post that, without reference to the one you disagree with. Or post your question in this related thread https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=738688
4. No 'recommendations' to buy specific gear.
5. One tip per posting, but you may add as many as you like.
6. No more rules.

If you use a camera rucsac bag, always lay it down on a level surface. Either keep the lid fully open, or fully zipped up. Nearly lost some lenses last week on a cliff-edge.

When changing SLR lenses always point the camera down to the ground, and avoid windy conditions. Amazing how many people don't do this.

If you have macro extension tubes - always keep them wrapped in storage (not just in a box) If they are lying around they can gather dust as they are open (no glass) and when you put them on your camera the dust will transfer to the sensor.

When shooting landscapes, never walk up to a scene, plant the tripod and take a shot. Walk around. Look at foreground and background objects, their relationships, and choose your position when you have the best composition.

Stop taking all your pictures, especially of things on the ground, from standing height or normal full tripod height. Get up. Get down. If you have to lay on the ground in mud to get a different angle, do so. A landscape photographer who does not come home with pants knees stained and soiled has not tried their hardest.

When shooting landscapes into the sun (sunrise or sunset), always lower exposure a few f-stops. If there is foreground material of value, use fill flash.

During initial setup, Camera settings should be set to where the camera does not shoot unless you have a (unfilled) memory card in the camera.

Be creative. Think creatively. BE DIFFERENT! Stop shooting the same old lame beam of light coming down into a cave in Antelope Canyon. It's been done 3 1/2 million times before!! Some how, some way do it differently!

Learn how to read a histogram and always use this as a preview on any important set of shots.
