If you don't have one already, buy a 35mm Canon body (EOS) body and use whatever "EF" lenses you have. Even if you shoot in auto mode, 35mm has much larger viewfinder and you will find yourself taking more time to compose a shot. Getting pictures developed takes time, and you can appreciate the results (good or bad) and apply them towards improving your digital images.

If you have a medium-to-large selection of lenses, consider buying a small camera bag that holds the camera with a lens attached and maybe room for one more lens and/or a flash. Sometimes it's nice to think about the shot using "what you brung" rather then wasting time thinking about what lens to use and switching all the time. This will improve how you choose a lens for a given situation.

Edit your images as desired then "save as" to keep your edit AND the original file. You WILL learn different/better editting techniques that you'll want to try on the original.

Read your owners manuals and dry run practice the gear to get familiar with everything prior to shooting.

When testing a lens for sharpness do not have any filters on it, use a tripod and shoot at a high enough shutter speed to prevent camera shake.

Your images will improve greatly when you get the flash off the camera. Learn to use off camera flash, mounting in on a bracket, holding it off to the side or mounted onto a lightstand ala Stroboist style.

If you carry your gear in a backpack or similar style bag, make sure you zip the zippers all the way to one side or the other instead of up at the top. If they are at the top, the weight of the gear can pull the zippers apart while you walk...

When shooting waterfalls, try using a CPL. It can help reduce glare on rocks and bring out more contrast in the scene.

Learn how to post process...

If you can't afford Photoshop... try Gimp, it's free, and for most stuff equal with Photoshop. http://www.gimp.org/ (external link)

Living in Austria, I am so glad that there is stuff like Gimp out there...
I am a happy giver, so if you find any misspelling in my text, you can keep them... :)

Review your photos from a month back. Check out your composition, focal length, aperture and exif data. Ask yourself what you could have done differently.

Start your own photo project. You don't need to share it with anyone if you don't want to. Learn from it.
