I'm thinking about getting the T1i but I've always heard bad things about the kit lens. Is the one that comes with the T1i good or should I buy the body and a seperate lens? I dont want to pay lots for a separate lens but would a little more if the returns where great!
Thanks
Denbeau

The Kit lens is NOT bad. It works just fine for learning and practicing your technique and you can absolutely get some pretty nice photos out of it.

are you talking about the 18-55IS?
it's best if you clarify which lens exactly you're talking about, as in Australia, the camera is sold with 3 different kit bundles.

The kit lens can take some very good photos. There are always going to be better lenses (otherwise there wouldn't be an L series) but there's really nothing to complain about with the kit lens imo.

It's the, EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. As sold at NewEgg.

And I thought it was better then previous kit lenses Canon have put out in the past, just wanted to be sure.

I was also looking at,
EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens. $255
What do you think? Is there a better, like a 300mm, for around the same price?

Thanks
Denbeau

Hello Denbeau! First time I've seen a fellow Peorian on here ;). The kit lens is good for learning no doubt. But if you're using the camera a lot, you'll quickly outgrow it. The 55-250 is great lens for the $$. It's my favorite lens for now. The 50mm 1.8 is a great lens as well for around $100. Most here will tell you to spend some time using the camera and then you'll have a better idea what you like to shoot the most and then be able to choose a lens that suits your needs. I for one can't wait to upgrade a few lenses, but money is tight right now so I'll have to make do with what I have, and thats OK.

Nice shots! Most all my eagle photos were taken in LeClaire Iowa at L&D 14 and a few down at Chautauqau Lake.

Kit Lens has great potential.
Check out some of the pictures taken with the kit lens on this thread for the T1i.

Budget was an issue for me too. I had the option to get that 55-250 IS, or a Sigma 70-300 APO.Being a newb, I researched the Lens Sample Photo Archive And to me 250mm and 300mm aren't that much of a difference in frame and the picture quality of the sigma was about the same. It was 100 dollars cheaper, has Macro, comes with hood and pouch. Canon has IS but hood is extra.

Right now amazon has some around 180. However you should gain more experience with whichever body/kit you buy. before making another lens purchase. Try out the bodies and kit lens in store if you can.

I would get the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS. You really can't do any better without spending at least triple. The next step up from the 18-55 IS, would probably be the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 - which is $400. Next step up from the 55-250 IS is the 70-200 F4L which is a better lens, but lacks IS. That is $550-600.

I just got both lenses mentioned (18-55 IS & 55-250 IS) for $300 used on here and they are awesome! They're not for me, for my cousins, but I tested them and wow! They can do some nice stuff.

I don't think the kit lens is all that bad.

It's certainly not the best, but it gets the job done

No trouble with the lens. Purchased separately for a XTi at US $170, a good bargain at that price.

I was as very pleasantly surprised by the performance of the 18-55 IS as I was disgusted by that of the 18-55.

The 55-250 IS, which I've only fairly recently acquired, is very serviceable indeed, but doesn't quite match the 18-55 IS in performance in my view, being weaker at low-light focus and suffering more CA/PF, often to the extent that I can't eliminate it with DPP.

That is not to say that I'm not satisfied with the 55-250 IS, which I am, but rather that the 18-55 IS is just that much more fantastic for its modest price.
