Excellent shots. I'm sure having the 300mm was nice.

Thanks

Rented it from calumet here in Chicago.

Edit* I see your in Chicago. Take a look at this thread I made on a Chicago board. http://chicagophotoshop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3140 (external link)

There are a few options available locally and it also has some info on the internet rental sites.

Calumet is a good place to rent from. I rented the 400 f/2.8 for the air show. Still processing my pics but have decided to call the 400 f/2.8 "Big Honk'in Lens" It weighs so much it deserved a special name. :)

The haze was a real killer this year though. Sky did not get good until around 1pm so all the morning shots have a lot of haze. Even in the afternoon there was on and off haze on Saturday.

A couple more:

A big one - C5
QUOTED IMAGE

LOL the mistake you made was calling that a C-5...it's a C-17 :)

Other than that, your shots are very sharp and excting!

Did you get on top of Castaways like you planned? I think I should have asked to jump in the area a bunch of photograhers had roped off (not the media area) so I would'nt have gotten run over by strollers and almost hit quite a few swinging the 300.

Did you hand hold the 400? I was thinking about getting that but read it was a beast to handhold. Instead I opted for the 300+1.4 combo which worked pretty well.

I started out thinking I could hand hold it. Learned quickly at 11.8 pounds that it was not a viable option. I had it on a monopod which worked well and would only pick it up when something was overhead. The lens is heavy enough that it is extremely hard to hold still...it made me realize how much I need to go to the gym. My left shoulder was killing me by the end of the day.

Below are a couple shots I liked from the day. The haze was a real killer and there is only so much that can be done in post.
