Just thought I'd share the mount I came up with for getting my FlexTT5 and 580exII to work with my Photek Softlighter II 46"

Parts List:
1 3-1/2" x 3/4" L Bracket
1 1/4" x 3/4" bolt
2 1/4" nuts
2 1/4" washers

Images of the mount:

The bracket is a 3.5" long L that comes with four 3/4" holes pre-drilled. That's the perfect size to mount a FlexTT5 as suggested by PocketWizard for optimal antenna position. The FlexTT5 is mounted by the 1/4-20 instead of the hotshoe because it seemed sturdier.

As you can see in picture 2, the hotshoe contacts don't touch the bracket, but I covered it with some painter's tape just in case.

Unfortunately, even with the flash sitting flat, instead of standing, it still stresses the softbox cover on the softlighter as can be seen in picture 3 and 4. It's about 2" too high.

The next step is to try to make an umbrella mount using the lower 3/4" hole in the bracket to move the speedlight closer to the center.

Nice. So you are a local bay area fellow.

Try with 2 umbrella adapters connected to each other. I think it was in the old softliter thread.

I tried that as well, but it pushed the flash head way too far into the softlighter given the extra depth of the upper half of the second umbrella adapter and the flexTT5.

At that point I couldn't use the removable shaft and had to use the full umbrella arm which put the "softbox" fairly far from the mount. Trying to keep it usable as it is in 3 where the extra shaft is removed and the "softbox" is right by the mount.

And yeah, love it here, except when BART threatens to strike!

This is how I'm doing it and it works perfectly and easily. Parts used:

- Manfrotto 026 swivel umbrella adaptor.

- Stroboframe universal shoe mount:

- Giottos mini ball head MH1004:

The trick is to setup the mini ballhead at a 90 degree angle and the flash head on the 580EX II to 180 degrees. This way, the flash head points directly into the back of the Softlighter II. This picture is shows the setup before the umbrella shaft is pulled all the way down (the sock encloses the setup up to the base of the Stroboframe cold shoe). Once done, the umbrella shaft can be removed.

Have you tried positioning the speedlite inside the softlighter?

I'd just use an AC7 with its umbrella mount. Nice secure mount for flash as well as FlexTT5 and it gets the speedlite right next to the umbrella shaft on the speedliter.

If I have time tomorrow I'll rig one up and take a shot.

Thisthread has a very simple horizontal mount solution that will keep the flash closet to the center of the umbrella.
