Is their a real need to update the firmware, if I'm not experiencing problems? Besides, I having a heck of a time getting it to download, then save to CF card. I don't recall having this much trouble updating firmware with my Olympus camera.:(

Take Care and May God Bless!

Never had any issues updating the firmware on my 50D - just follow the instructions and it should work perfectly.

The only thing i can think that you may be having problems with is the firmware is in a ZIP file when you download it. Just make sure you extract it (i did to the desktop) and then drag it to the CF card. Once it is on, select the firmware update in the menu and you are good to go 30 secs later.

It only too about 5 mins for me from reaching the page to having the updated firmware loaded in.

while neilwood32's comment is true 99.9% of the time, I would caution everyone from taking this procedure too lightly. IF (and I know that's a big if) something were to go wrong during the procedure, your camera would most likely need to be returned to Canon for service, AND the repair would not be considered warranty related.

Always something to consider.

I usually do not upgrade my firmware unless it fixes an issue I am having. I just don't like the risk (however small it is).

I agree.

Canon recomends that you at least check the size of the firmware after you have extracted it. I would rather an MD5 checksum, I agree unless you are seeing the magenta cast why bother.

There are those who believe that Canon slips some secret updates in there to solve problems we are not aware of. I believe this is mostly wishful thinking and feel no great pressure to update from 1.06

Thanks for all the help. I went to my IMac to do the update this time and it worked. Another reason I'm liking my IMac more than my Windows based laptop.

Take Care and may God Bless!
