Hi all. Two shots I took today that I'd like some opinions on please.

I still have not much idea on photomatix, I just slide stuff until I get near enough to what I like.

The first one has that metallic look about it, which half of me likes, the other half doesn't, is this a photomatix setting or back at exposure time?

The second one is more to what I personally like in HDR. Forget my composition skills, I just don't have a photographers eye when it comes to landscapes, which is why I normally shoot action stuff, but I am trying, VERY trying!

not bad at all. that first one barely looks like an hdr and the second one can pass as not looking hdr at all. good job!

sounds to me like you understand it just fine. :)

I think both images are fine in terms of processing, personally, I prefer the 2nd one. You could also try duplicating the original layer on the first one and setting the opacity on it low, say 25%, to tone down the photomatix a little, that would get rid of some of that metallic look you're talking about.

The second show is absolutely fantastic. Very nice work!

The first looks a little "off" to me. I can't pin-point. I have to agree with what you said "half of me likes, the other half doesn't"

Very nice; the first seems to need a little more sky. #2 is very nice all the way around!

Cheers msclman99. I really was trying for a "normal" HDR shot without all the weird effects it can give. I do like that effect in HDR, but I wanted to get one that didn't have that style. If there was a rusty car on the beach maybe, but for just a simple beach shot it would have made it not as nice I reckon......like my first one, which i'm 50/50 about.

Thanks for the feedback polarbare.
Interesting you say about the duplicating and blending with the original. I used a mixed original/blended sky in the second one as I felt the photomatix sky was out of place with the rest of the image.

I actually went down there yesterday to try out an 8 stop ND filter to get the slow shutter daytime ocean look, but got there to find no swell, so I did some bracketing whilst I was there.

Thanks scottes, I could have another go at the first one for practice, but I think I should just find a better composition. The area is nice, I just need to work out how to shoot it.

CameraBuff: Thanks! I was concentrating on getting as much rocks into the first pic as I felt whilst it was a nice day, there was nothing fancy in the sky, no clouds at all I basically forgot to get enough sky, then when I aligned the horizon and tried to remove the lens distortion I ended up with even less sky! I'll put that down to lack of experience!

I forgot to mention, the blurred water effect is from an 8 stop ND filter and polariser. The exposures were down to around .5 second +/- a couple of stops. I got most of the colors back to "normal" in the raw conversion, but I assume this might have something to do with the color base it has? The second shot is only with a polariser.

oh, and I just noticed someones jumper draped over a rock in the second shot. I remember walking past it on the walk in, prob left by a fisho, but didn't think about it until I saw it in the shot just then....ah well!

Very nice work, thank you for shareing. I like number 1 best when I "crop the top" with my browser window. That long white wave, the freighters and the horizon are a view of their own with those rocks jutting out as the bottom of the frame. The shore line action pops more for me when those rocks jutting out is at the top of the frame. Excellent capture.

Thanks a lot for the feedback everyone, and I think I agree with your crop idea knightranger.

I love the second one. It's extremely well shot and processed. The rocks really pop out, and it makes the viewer feel like he's on that beach.

Thank you. bw!

That second shot is very nicely processed. I wouldn't have known it was HDR unless you said so.
