I have this odd problem trying to copy the RAW files from my camera (T1i) to the PC.

I took shots in RAW+JPEG.

When I use the USB cable from the camera to the PC, all the .CR2 files become .jpg files (so I'd have 2 files with the same name ending in .jpg) -- so when I copy them to the PC I have IMG_1104.jpg and IMG_1104(1).jpg or something along those lines. I'm just copying them using "my computer"/explorer not any fancy software (though I have all the canon software installed on both computers).

If I use a card reader, the files come out as .CR2 (RAW) without any problems (i.e. IMG+1104.jpg and IMG_1104.cr2)

Same problem occurs on PC and laptop, XP and Vista.

Any ideas?

No idea, sorry. I'm replying to keep an eye on the tech solution that someone's going to offer. I've always used a card reader so the problem hasn't appeared for me.

Windows has problems recognizing .CR2 via usb unless you are using the Canon interface software EOS Utility. An alternate solution is to invest $20 in a card reader.
Edit - Oops sorry, didn't notice you wrote that you have a reader. So either use it or EOS Utility.

Thanks, I'll try the EOS utility from home tonight (just out of curiosity if it would "fix" the USB problem).

I would've thought that Canon would have some sort of driver or something for this, but I wasn't able to find anything online.

That's a known bug in XP. But it happens in Vista, too? Interesting...

Use ZoomBrowser to transfer the images. You can set it up so it files them nicely under shooting date. Then use DPP (or whatever program takes your fancy) to edit your photos.

This works for me, but I use a reader as it is much faster. Noticeably so when I used my camera once to do it. The reader is also less bulky and takes up less room on the desk. With my fast card and reader it's about 0.5 second to download a RAW file taken on my 40D. If you're interested I use Sandisk Extreme III cards and Sandisk Extreme USB reader.

Thanks for the input swann1, I think the card reader is the route I'm going to have to use.

Good to know that it's not just my computers.

Thanks everyone.
