A couple new macros from the last 2 days using my modded EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 III :) Processed in Lightroom 2.4.

If you stop down the aperture enough (f/18+), this modded lens does in fact produce a pretty wide depth of field (despite these two). Otherwise, it is very narrow as you can see from some of my pics with it (Flickr).

Good ones. The DOF from the lens will be the same as any other macro lens at the same magnification and aperture.

Oooh didn't know it worked that way. So even my modded one here (front element removed so the next set of glass is at the front) is the same as another lens with the same aperture and magnification?
Whenever I see pics from true macro lenses, it seems like they don't have such a crazy narrow DOF, right?

Your modded lens has a very high magnification and that is why the DOF is so small.

Try shooting at the 35mm end of the lens and stop down to f/32.

The combination of less magnification and small aperture will give you more DOF.

Here are some of mine shot with a modded 35-80:
