Is your 70-200 f/4 Is USM noisy? If it's quiet when you're using it, do you hear the motor whirling inside a lot when you're using auto focus and the stabilizer is on?

Cheers,

Coming from a 70-200 f4 non-IS and trying my buddies IS version, it's "louder". It was strange at first but it's just the IS motor going. The auto focus motor is pretty quiet in both.

I don't know whats making the noise. All I know is that when I'm pushing the button on my camera and the lens is focusing. I keep hearing a whirring sound. It lasts for up to say 5 secs. I push the shutter button and it will start again.

Worried - Is there a need to be?

I tried someone's recently -- it was distinctly louder than my 24-105.

+1. I asked this about a year ago when I first got my 70-200/4 IS. Many POTNers said the IS is very noisy. But now I don't notice it as much.

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

You will definitely hear the IS humming when you activate it - it's a good sign. No noise = uh oh..

Yea, mine makes the humming sound, plus this horrible scratching sound when the IS starts and stops.

I never ventured to ask if it was normal, just assumed it was since everything worked perfectly.

I believe its the iS, I just got mine recently and noticed the noise, kind of like sand paper plates rubbing together LOL. I turned the IS off and it was not there so gather it is the IS. I just purchased the 100-400 IS and thought the IS was not working due to the silence of the IS in that lens, seems it is working fine after a few checks. I guess its just something about the 70-200 F4 IS lens. In any case it produces beautiful images so I can put up with the noise
