How did the bears react with the fill flash? Once in Yellowstone we used a flash because of the darkness and the bears didn't get phased, although we got a ration of *@#! from others.

Great work, Ed!

The eye contact in #2 is special. Images always look so good when you see some of the whites of their eyes.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

thanx Tom...and everyone! the problem with bears is they have little "pig" eyes but i do agree that eye contact can make a shot more interesting.

Great work Ed.. I love #2, the look in her eyes makes her seem so loving and vulnerable, something most do not associate with bears.

All the shots are lovely..

I'm sure you had a great time!

Marcy -- we went with Alaska Brown Bear Viewing in Katmai National Park. Photography and wildlife to (external link)

they have two boats. one that holds eight guests and another that holds five. there were four of us and we booked the smaller boat. the larger group on the other boat was not as mobile so i think our experience was probably better and we did more trekking. plus we had the best guide.

i would view our tour as "special" because we called all the shots and we got closer to bears because of our small group and expert guide.

Outstanding series. Are you going next year? Why wife and I are traveling more sibnce retirement This is something I will be putting on my list. I live in AK for 5 years and enjoyed every minute. Was it hard allowing them in that close? I'd really like to hear more.

you mean was i scared? surprisingly none of us was scared for the most part, and there is safety in numbers. melissa looked at us a couple of times but she was much more concerned about other bears than us. in fact her clubs got quite close to us and she just kept on grazing. she would never had let an adult bear get anywhere near her cubs. our guides told us of times when mother bears would leave their cubs next to people while they fished because they knew the cubs would be safe. in fact one told of a time when he had to go and look for mom with the cubs in tow :D.

i'm working on some more pictures from another area that i'll post soon in another thread and i'll talk about the one time that we were scared. also we went to the grizzly maze where timothy treadwell and his grilfriend were killed with the pilot who found timothy and that really made the trip for me. i'll post some pics of that too.
