I'm taking a course to certify as a Minnesota Master Naturalist (external link). We have a series of field trips to attend and this past weekend we visited Interstate State Park (external link) which has some really interesting geology. I've found the G10 to be such a great camera for situations like this where it's just not practical to bring the DLSR. Of course, being the middle of the day, the lighting isn't that great, but the G10 still does a fine job considering, even on full auto mode.

The park has the highest concentration of geological potholes in the world, which were drilled down into the basalt layer by glacial melt water. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area (just north of the Twin Cities, along the St. Croix River.)

Small pothole with some duckweed growing in it:

Since I couldnt' get the railing and shadows out of view, I decided to make them part of the photo.

View from inside the one pothole that you can go down into:

Yeah, it's a nice little camera. I've been very happy with it for just general out-and-about photography. I don't usually take my DSLR along unless there is something specific I want to photograph and use that for.

Thanks, it's an interesting place. There are some unique circumstance that allowed these potholes to form - the very hard volcanic rock (basalt, which is harder than steel), lots of water carrying enough sediment (from the glacial melt), and turbulence (causing circular eddies to drill down in the rock.)
