Hey.

I was wondering how many shots you can get out of a 5d Mark II battery?

Have an upcoming wedding, wondering whether i should buy a spare or not.

Thanks!

Yes you should buy a spare. Even if it's rated to last 10,000 shots you should have a second battery.

BTW your website is currently broken.

Without really counting, we've gone through 2 16gb CF cards shooting in RAW without changing batteries, but we also have spare batteries and 5D bodies just in case. Better safe than sorry.

Especially when you can get an aftermarket battery that works just fine for like $12 from Amazon. I've got like 4 of them :)

The question is how many future weddings can you book once you have the reputation as a shooter who covers wedding unprepared? I once had someone show up to an event as my second shooter with only 1 battery and 4gb worth of memory. He filled up his card, I lent him one. His battery died...I sent him home. Guess who never worked for me again?

I shot a wedding this weekend with a 1DMKIII and 5DMKII and I would say they each got just about even amount of shots...maybe 400-500 shots each. The battery meter still showed almost full. But I do have and brought battery backups b/c you never know when one would fail.

More than likely, you can do an entire wedding with one battery + backup. Should be good for 1500+ shots, especially if you don't turn your camera off. (i.e. let it go into sleep mode and don't switch it OFF...)

The answer to your question depends on other factors not specified; in particular, if you are using a flash unit, and whether you are using IS lenses (and if so, which ones). IS draws power from the main battery; flash doesn't but the body does use power to transmit settings to the flash.

No problem! Like I said, I've got three of them - they need to be charged SEPARATELY from the Canon chargers (they can ruin the Canon charger) and they don't register in the camera (meaning it doesn't show up how much batter is available/left) - but I figure when I've taken around 1000 shots, I'll change out. Much better than paying 100 bucks for the Canon ones like people were when I bought the batteries!

Thanks for the tip. I already have a spare Canon LP-E6, but you really can't beat the price of these as backups. I bought 2 at $12.95 each plus shipping. Coincidentally, I was in the market for the battery grip for my 5D Mark II, but was putting it off due to the cost. While purchasing these batteries, saw a link to the Zeikos ZE-CBG5DII Battery Grip for the 5D Mark II, and decided to take a chance and order that as well. All positive reviews on Amazon, and also a $83.29 price tag, versus the Canon model that is over $250. Hopefully, it works out.

Sometimes we do video's and that usually drains a full battery in less than 2 hours. if just shooting photos, I would have at least 2 batteries. (I have 3 per camera).

I'm late to the party, but I'll go ahead and echo Bobby's comments anyway. I have two of them that I got off eBay; may have been <$30 for the pair plus charger. A little concerning that you won't know they're spent until your camera doesn't work anymore, but the reality is that there primary job is to just be charged and in the bag. I had an 11 hour event about a month ago and shot more than 2,000 RAW's with still about half life left on the original Canon battery. I don't expect to ever need them (which is why I elected not to spend the $'s for the branded battery), but like for all equipment, you need to have a backup.

Hey, I just shot a wedding, 5D Mark II, brought along 2 genuine canon batteries. Shot 1k images, over 12 hours, and I still had battery to spare, without needing to switch to my second battery.

Very impressive.

I've shot about a half dozen weddings with my 5D MkII now, and I have not yet had to change batteries for any of them. The weddings varied from 7-9 hours, and my shot count average was 1100 -- with battery to spare. I don't use the LiveView mode but I will chimp a little and do some light, real-time culling of the images. Other than that, I leave my camera on the entire day and let the sleep mode take care of the periods I am not shooting.

It is rather impressive. I also have a second battery that I alternate with to increase the life span of each.
