yeah, the the focus ring is VERY SMOOTH to turn (like a new lens), and the AF focuses fast like a lens with USM should! :)

i don't suppose its like the 28/1.8, is it?

i've gone through 2 copies of the 50/1.4 and they are both more grindy than other ring-usm lenses.

Yeah my 50mm f1.4 lens won't autofocus anymore either. I've been contemplating on fixing it for a few months now. Thanks for the perfect topic with pics, now I will go ahead and get it fixed. Did you submit the repair request online at canon?

Yep! Filled it out online, printed out the confirmation thing after you fill it out and included it with the lens in the package. They tell you to insure it for the same value as the lens and get a tracking # just in case. They tell you that in the unlikely event that your lens has other problems (mold, sand, water, etc) they will give you a new estimate and present it to you for authorization.

On the website, you can see if it has been completed, if it has been shipped and when it is shipped they will give you the tracking number. They used fedex overnight for mine.

I've been debating on spending the $85-100 to get mine fixed (it won't autofocus at all) and you've convinced me to pronto. Congrats on getting such a good repair.

Well a friend has a new 50 1.4 and it feels just like that. I agree, the 50 isn't as smooth as, say, the 17-55's focus ring.
