5D2 Shutter

Hi,

I just got my 5D2 a few hours back. The battery is charging and I can't wait to go out and shoot. Before charging the battery, I did take a few test shots and found the shutter sound to be a bit odd. I have a 50D and that shutter sounds very solid. I used to have a 450D (sold to fund the 5D2) and that sounded whiny and springy (for lack of a better way to describe it). I find that the 5D sounds like a combination of 50D and 450D - I can hear the springy sound right at the end of the shutter sound. Is this the way its supposed to sound? I've heard recorded sounds available on line and I find that I'm unable to make a good comparison as my speakers are shot. I'm hoping for anyone to compare notes with me on this - I just want to know if its supposed to sound this way or if there's something wrong with my copy.

Thanks in advance.
Nik

Hi Nik...

FWIW, in comparing the shutter sounds on my bodies, I'd describe them as:

MkIII: FLICK
40D: CLACK
5D: Ahhhhhhhhhh.....

The 5D Classic is much more "fluid" and "gentle" and I should think the 5DMkII is similar when compared to XXD or 1-series bodies.

Hi Jay,

I would agree that the 40D is a CLACK. Its the same with the 50D and it sounds very reassuring. But my 5D2 sounds like a spring is loose somewhere in the shutter assembly. I hear the springy sound after the clack... I'm hoping its normal.

Ok - never mind. I just spoke with someone who also has a 5D2. Apprently, its supposed to sound that way - so there's nothing to worry about. *whew*

I love the clunk sound of my 5DMKII over the click of my 50D

I just bought mine yesterday too, and wouldnt describe it as a clunk, but more of a cushioned thud.
I never heard a shutter like it.

I agree. Its doesn't really sound like a clunk to me either. In fact, if anything, it sounds cheap, actually.

agreed! I prefer the sound of the 40/50D over the 5D2.

But the 1D definitely has the best. It's more of of SWOOSH compared to the whine of the 5D.

I agree too. The 5DII sounds weird to me. It sounds more "electronic". My 40D sounds like its doing its business without holding back....givin it the onion and all that....sorry....its demolition derby season here and my car is almost built. LOL

Interesting, I always thought that the 40D/50D sounds more "electronic" that the 5D's.

Oh well, doesn't make a bit of difference anyway.

True that. So long as it is reliable and producing great pictures, I don't really care about what it sounds like! :)

The 5DII has a different sound. Comparing mine to my 40D it is a smoother, softer sound. I personally prefer it to the hard sound of my 40D. In the end it does not matter though.

Hello Nik,

I also had a similar concern with the 5D Mark II shutter. It's the electronic buzz noise made during and just after the return of the mirror. I sent the camera into Canon for a review and they sent it back inidcating that the noise was "within spec".

After reviewing a few on-line Mark II shutter sounds, it appears that there is quite a range of "within spec". While the image quality is likely not affected by this noise, those of us with Mark IIs with the buzz noise will have to decide whether that will influence their picture taking (i.e. I do a lot of wildlife photography, and require a quieter camera in many instances).

Cheers
