I just got this lens today and was pretty excited as I've heard good things about it even though it's not that expensive but I don't seem to be able to get good exposure except with flash. Why would that be if everything else is good (iso, av, tv)?

a sample picture would be nice.

I think the mixture of your shutter, iso and aperture is kinda the problem since you are complaining about the exposure. Meter well with your cam and try again.

I still think its your settings that are at fault here. Not the lens. just my 2 cents :D

Haha I guess it could just be my overly bright screen here at work. It could be a little underexposed. Are you shooting M, Av, Tv ? I don't mean to insult you but do you have any EC dialed in? I know sometimes I accidentally add some EC by spinning the wheel on the back :p

Histogram seemed OK but then again I'm just starting to learn how to read them. Everything seems pretty spread out - nothing jammed to the extreme right or left.

The only other screen I have is my laptop and that seems so varible depending on where I adjust the screen. It still seems like it could come up a bit but not quite as bad.

I mainly work on my desktop but it's also the puter that the kids use and we have the brightness turned down a little for them and also because I thought that is what I was suppose to do to when trying PP. I can't buy something to calibrate my screen so I have to go off those little grey scales. Maybe it's my screen that's too dark?

I hate to up the brightness because my main objective is to print images vs. web applications and it seems I always have to overdo a bit as is in order to get a good print.

If the histo is good I can't seem to find any other problem but your screen. I could be wrong.

Is this the first time you encountered this? Or are you just being critical with this "new lens" of yours :D

try doing it with flash and look at the histo too. If the flash seem ok to you but the Histo says its over exposing, maybe its really the screen.

Sorry i am running out of ideas :D maybe others can chime in :D

Thanks for your help ~ I really appreciate it! :) I'm beginning to think it's my screen, too, and I'm going to have to break DH's heart and tell him I need yet another photography related item (something to calibrate my screen). He'll be thrilled! LOL

And I might be a little critical of the new lens. I'm very partial to my nifty fifty. :D I'll try to welcome it more warmly into the family. ;)

I have this lens (came with my kit). It's decent - can't expect too much considering how much it costs. 18-55 is an awesome working range though.
