I went from the nifty fifty to the 18-55mm for my first two lenses. It definitely took some getting used to--the 50 just seemed to take pictures effortlessly, while the 18-55mm took some work. I learned to appreciate the walk-around flexibility of the kit lens, though, and it's on more often than the 50 I dare say :-)

That's good to hear. Yes, I agree about the fifty's abilities - love it! I hope I can get comfortable with the 18-55mm soon and feel the love for it as well. :)

I think the pic is fine
I see you shot at 50mm f5.6
Remember that the kit is wide open at 50mm f5.6 and at its weakest point while the 50mm prime is well at it peak at f5.6

This is one I shot today and haven't done anything with......

I concur with those who say it's a bit dark...dull too...I tweeked the sharpening it a bit too, to show the nappy texture in the clothing too...Hope you don't mind...

Looks good! :) Thanks! I don't have photoshop, just gimp - still feeling my way around it and learning how to do things.

You're welcome...I use Photoshop 6, so old you could probably find it used real cheap.

Camera's metering isn't perfect and it may have been fooled in this case, perhaps by a bright background or something like that.

You can try different metering modes like center weighted or partial and just meter off the face. You can also check the histogram afterwards and then make adjustments to the Exposure value compensation and reshoot. You can also make small adjustments in the computer. Canon should come with DPP which is a very nice program and you can make the changes there or with gimp as you already use it.

What a happy looking cute baby...

That shot is exposed about the way I'd expect - the camera tries to average all the tones out to middle-gray, and that's about what you have. You want it brighter - you can set the camera to +2/3 exposure compensation, or you can brighten it in post processing.

Nothing wrong with your lens or your camera.

But your monitor? Maybe...

I'm beginning to think it's my screen, too, and I'm going to have to break DH's heart and tell him I need yet another photography related item (something to calibrate my screen). He'll be thrilled! LOL

You don't need any equipment to adjust brightness and contrast, just for color calibration. Since your issue is brightness, adjust on this chart:
