Canon 17-40/f4 vs Tamron 17-35/f2.8-4 on 5D

Hey all,

Thinking of a wide-angle and wondering if I should go for the 17-40L/f4 or the Tamron 17-35/f2.8-4 lens, body is a Canon 5D. The Tamron is pretty well rated and most reviews of it are quite favorable. I like what I see from it, I also like what I see from the 17-40L.

Besides weathersealing, one advantage the Canon has is DxO can correct the 17-40, but I doubt if the Tamron 17-35 is in their database. The only other thing I can think of is the Canon has slightly more reach. Anyone do a head-to-head on these two?

Regards,
c00lpix

Seriously,

46 views and NO comment? I'm asking something more clear than "help! what lens!". Will the 17-40L trounce the Tamron, or are they kind of close? Having a hard time deciding.

The Tamron won't fit on the 5D as it's EF-S so you would have to go with the 17-40L I had the lens and it was awesome except in really low light as it's F4 and not f2.8 like the 16-35L

Sorry but the Tamron WILL fit and be used fine. I've been looking into this a lot and that's the outcome i've came too.

So much so, i'm wanting one and struggling to find one, so if you see any for sale cOOlpix, let me know. Thanks

I would get the L for a few reasons:
-L build quality
-more range
-constant aperture

Get the Tamron. It comes with an awesome looking hood. You can spend the $$ you save on some slave speedlights

I thought this was a good side-by-side comparison between the two lenses...

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

I've never done a head to head but I do love my 17-40L on my 5D. After doing a 3 day shoot of the larges VW show in Canada - Great Canadian VW show. I was blown away with the IQ of my phenominal copy of the 17-40L with Kenko CPL. From wideopen to stopped down the IQ was absolutely incredible.

Straight out of camera. The web resizing just kills the IQ

I have the Tamron and my girlfriend has the Canon.
In all honesty, the Canon is better than the Tamron, but I have nothing bad to say about the Tamron at all except for maybe the plastic build.
It DOES work on FF. Don't be fooled.

The only reason I might get rid of it is to fund a Sigma 12-24.

Nice comparison. I would have thought that the Canon would be better hands down. The outdoor comparison shocked my at f/4.
