As a photo amateur I'm sure I'll be asking a lot of questions here, so I wanted to make sure to contribute as well :)

The short story: I've been working on a project right now for Adobe Creative Suite 4 - specifically the Student Editions...and as a result I am pretty knowledgeable about their options for college/univ. students.

So if you're a student and are stumped on how the registration/student validation/student pricing for Creative Suite 4 works -- post any questions below and I'd be happy to help answer them.

Of course :) Well it's all about give+take, and since it is almost the start of fall college semesters, I figured that someone probably has questions about the Student Editions...especially students (or parents of students) picking it up for the first time.

Nice of you to offer.

I'm the parent of a student and I'm considering getting CS4 for the two of us. I believe two licenses are given, right?

Looks like I need to order it and when I install I have to enter an authorization number from Adobe that I get when I send them a copy of the student body card. I can do this online, I imagine.

Do I buy the package first, or can I get the authorization before buying?

Adobe Creative Suite 4 Student Editions may be used on up to two computers at a time per serial number. It's also good to know that if you get a new computer or replace one, you may uninstall it from the old computer and add it to the new one.

Looks like I need to order it and when I install I have to enter an authorization number from Adobe that I get when I send them a copy of the student body card. I can do this online, I imagine.

To validate your copy of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Student Editions, just send the form located inside the box (or via e-mail if ordering the direct download) along with your proof of eligibility by fax or e-mail. You will need to submit a photocopy of a valid, current college/university student ID that includes the student's name, date, and a photo.

And yes, you can submit this info all online. In case you are wondering, this is the form (in PDF) that they will ask you to submit:
http://store.adobe.com/store/en_us/faxform.html (external link)

Do I buy the package first, or can I get the authorization before buying?

You'll buy the software first, and it will include instructions and a form (the one in the link above) to submit for authorization. There are 3 different Student Editions of Creative Suite 4, so the easiest way to get started and choose which one to get is to go to http://studenteditions.adobe.com …tEditionProducts/overview (external link)

Also FYI the Adobe has the Student Editions at the discounted price (up to 80% off) and there's also free shipping up through Sept. 30th '09.

Hope this helps! And if you have any more questions feel free to post 'em :)

Hmmm. Just looked at my daughter's ID card. Strange - no date anywhere on it. Well, I guess there are other ways to prove you're a current student.

I imagine that they've seen IDs from this place before - it's the University of California, Davis.

I sent a current copy of my transcript, which did have the date, along with a copy of my student ID. HTH.

While it can be installed on 2 machines at the same time, it is not supposed to be used on both at the same time.;)

I think one of the most popular questions I've seen asked is "Can I upgrade the student edition to the full edition in the future?" There seem to be a lot of confusion over this.

Yep, that question and "Can I use a student edition for paying work?"

AFAIK the answer is different for the USA and Europe.

I read on an Abode thread that one can use the software for paying work as long as it was legally bought.

If you're interested in student editions you don't have to buy through Adobe. I bought LR and CS4E from Provantage.com. First I scanned my son's last report card and attached it to an email to their academic rep. It took one day for them to authorize, then I bought the academic version on their website. It arrived 4 days later.

Provantage was $40 cheaper than Academicsuperstore and Adobe's store.
