Everything is soft...I just can't seem to get a crisp picture with the darn thing.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

I noticed when mine was soft all around. If shot F11, it was "alright" ;)

I hope Irvine gets it right for you though. If not, I recommend Jersey.

Dang, that blows. Hopefully they will get it right for you. If so, it will be worth the wait.

I had problems with my 70-200 lens and Irvine fixed it right up. Skip also dropped my whole Pelican onto the cement driveway with all my lenses in it and they all tumbled to the ground. Nothing was 'broken' but none of them focused well after that and they all took a trip to Irvine for repairs. We have had great results. So far.

Just got my 24-70 back from Newport News. Its new, but didn't focus properly on either end, and I couldn't micro-adjust it out(would have sent it in anyways, I like all my lenses at 0 micro-adjust). Came back just under 2 weeks later, and appears fine. 24mm is a tad soft at f/2.8, but doesn't appear to be missing focus. I've had luck at Jersey with other lens adjustments(except my 50L).

Thread got me curious, so I went out and took a couple snaps in the back yard. Lightroom defaults so they need sharpening, full frame + 100% The bee moved in the 24mm shot, so look at the flower.

Its not my sharpest lens, wide open, but I'm happy with it.

My lens came back today from the Factory service center. Apparently the mechanical chassis was loose and the darn thing was rear focusing. They replaced the chassis and hopefully tomorrow I will find out that my lens is all that it is cracked up to be ;)

Do you notice when you rotate the focal ring from 24mm to just before 28mm there is a bind when holding it "normal shooting position," but when you point your lens straight up it dissapears. It it like the lens is binding as it is retracting. I hear that is "normal?" I am hoping it gets better as I use my freshly repaired lens...?
As for CA... I guess it's "ok" but I would expect better control. But I know any overexposed parts out of focus exhibits CA... Thanks for the crop pics. I will try to post some in a few days... Not 4 hours.. LOL...

I wouldn't say mine binds, but it gets progressively stiffer going down the range. Noticeably so at about 35mm. Doesn't seem to matter which way I point the lens, its about the same. Never noticed it before this post. :)

At 10ft+, f/2.8, 24mm, DOF is over 11 feet. If its soft then, its optics, not a focus issue. Its known this lens isn't super sharp, so I think you're expecting too much. The shot above looks good to me, damn near the entire scene is in focus(as you'd expect). The 100% crop looks reasonable, maybe a bit of ISO softness, and possibly a bit of motion blur, but not all that bad.(no EXIF to check my assumptions).

If that isn't good enough, we don't have much choice, in that range. I wish my 24-70 was sharper, but for 'me' its a fine compromise when I can't control the environment enough to use a prime.

OK, so I was wrong about the noise and motion. I shot a party recently w/ my 24-70 on my 1d-III, and had similar results to yours, but at ISO 800+, and let my SS drop too far.

Your lens does appear softer than mine. I just took the shots below, from about 10'. 5d-2, ISO 200, f/2.8, 1/200th, with bounce flash, center focus point. 100% center crops, lightroom defaults, 24mm first, then 70mm.

I'd send it in(I did mine), and see if Canon can get it right for you too.
