I'm still trying to figure out how to capture this crazy display.

How cool is that. I like how all their beaks are pointing towards the feeder. :) All but one guy.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I've seen them swarm like that in the twilight in coastal California - amazing sight!
Wish our eastern hummers were more congenial to one another.

I've never seen anything like this. The feeder has only been up for 3 days. I think I saw about 10 while living in Washington, Michigan , and North Carolina over the last 2 decades.

OMGWTFBBQ

Wow. Just... wow. That is AMAZING. What did you put in that feeder, crack cocaine!?

I can barely get 1 or 2 birds to come to mine...I sat mine out in the backyard in front of a bedroom window and they'd be all skittish.... Took a shot of one bird while feeding, it was very aggressive--it heard the click and it actually stopped what it was doing, came over and investigated me and the camera. My window was totally open (tried shooting through the window--big mistake--then through the window screen which was better but still kinda weird).

But I count no less than two dozen hummingbirds in that one shot. Just freakin' amazing. You gotta tell me your secret!

No kidding. We have them stopping by, but they are one mean bird chasing away any other hummers and even the finches that feed on the sunflowers near by.

When I saw them in California, they were all buzzing around a hanging basket of fuschias or some such flower. I think the species that freqent the western regions travel in flocks, rather than solitary the way the Ruby Throated variety does. They seem larger than what I'm used to here.
The very first time I saw a bunch of hummers together was in a cottonwood grove in Utah - they were black-chins.

They are very very territorial, I was so surprised by how aggressive they can be. They just seem to drink nectar and use all that energy to chase each other all day.

One thing you can try is to hang multiple feeders spaced wide apart if you have a large enough backyard. But usually one of them is dominant...belligerent, really.

Slowly, I'm getting better at photographing them.

Okay, that's cool!

We have two feeders and they're picky about that. I think we have about 10ish that frequent our backyard. It's scary as they wizz by you 2-3 feet from your face...

Wow amazing sight! The feeder has only been up for 3 days!

Years and years ago, my grandfather would put up his feeder and about two dozen Hummers would come and feed. Though these Hummers had been coming back generation after generation.
