I'll start this post by admitting that I can be somewhat compulsive about things :D

On to the matter at hand.......

The Elinchrom EL206036 is the knob that is used to hold the strobes' mount to a light stand. When you place an Elinchrom strobe on a stand you tighten the knob to hold it firmly in place.

Apparently this part is one that morph's (not really) and changes regularly. BogenImaging (US Distributor for Elinchrom) stocks and sells Elinchrom parts but as the part changes, if there is stock of the older part, those older items are sold before new parts are ordered and you can very well get a different part even though it has the same part number as a more current version. I thought it was that simple but now I'm not so sure.

A while back I purchased a kit with two 600RX strobes. I recently purchased a like new, but used 600RX. One day while using my lights I noticed that the knob on the used strobe was different from the knobs on the newer strobes. That knob resembled the knob that I had on my 400BX's (gray version, not black) and was what is called a star knob.

I liked that knob more than the 'T' knob on the newer strobes (for no particular reason) and I contacted BogenImaging to see if I could replace the T knobs with Star knobs so they all matched (thus the compulsive behavior). I was told that the Star knob was the older style and they no longer make that part. The current version of the EL206036 was a T knob like the knob I have on my new 600RX's.

So I decided to order a T knob to replace the Star knob and knowing that I would be buying more Elinchrom strobes I figured I would order a couple of extras since they are only $1.74 a piece. They only had 2 in stock so I took both of them.

When I got my order I saw right away that they were the T knob but were a completely different T knob than the ones on my 600RX's. This was a more substantial knob that had the Elinchrom logo on the top.

I called BogenImaging parts department once again and upon telling them that I got a different knob I was told that that's what they have and it's the current EL206036. I was also told "what's the big deal? It's only a knob". While that is true I can't stand when people speak to me like that and don't seem to get it or care about my question/complaint.

OK, let me say that I'm well aware that it's only a knob and it has nothing to do with performance. That's not the point.

Now I had 2 of the heavier T knobs and since I was told that it was the current part I asked if they had gotten any more in stock and they said they had 3 there. I decided to order those 3 so that I could have 3 of the same for my current strobes and an extra for the next strobe I get, just in case it didn't have the same knob.

I know you're saying this guy is nuts. :D

I received the new order and to my surprise I got more of the thinner T knobs that are on the pair of 600RX's in my kit. This time I decided to do nothing and use the thinner T knobs since I know had 5 of them. The others can go in my Elinchrom spare parts drawer.

Below are images of the 3 different knobs. On the left is the start knob. The middle is the heavier T with the Elinchrom logo and the right is the thinner T knob. At this point I have no idea what I would get if I ordered more but I've never seen so much confusion and variation in one part before.

Which EL206036 do you have? On which strobes? and how old are they?
Obviously this is more of a fun and silly set of questions than something to be taken seriously as if it matters. :D

Hey Rai,

I don't know that anything will help and I'm not sure there's a right or wrong answer. I'm just curious to see the variation it all its glory. :D

Just played with an RX600 in my local dealer's store today ... and it was the star knob on left. They just started carrying Elinchrom about 1 month ago so it's a recently received version.

On occasion, BogenUSA confounds me too Robert.

I have some of the thinner ones and some of the star shaped ones on my RXs. I would buy more to use all one type, but walking all the way down to the flash centre without stepping on any cracks in the pavement takes hours, and my tinfoil hat tends to attract a lot of attention.

Now you're just making fun of me. ;) I bet I'm not alone on this one.

Hermes, I don't think you're in any position to poke fun. ;)

More than one occasion Jason. If you heard the 400BX modeling light story you'd really be scratching your head about Bogen.

The pair of RX600 I bought last August have the thin T knob (right side in your picture). The thick T knob looks stronger and more bling..... Wanna trade?

I actually wanted the heavier T knob for all of mine but I was only able to get 2 and no one can say or guarantee what you'll get if you order that part number.
