I am looking to add a less expensive zoom to my lens collection. I am looking at either of the 70-300's in the Sigma or Tamron lines. I have the 70-200mm Macro on the 1D but I would like a lighter less expensive tele for the XT. The few dealers where I live only carry the Canon and Tamron lenes. Does anyone have experience with both lens. I appreciate any feedback I can get.:)

Have a look at the Canon 55-250 IS. A better lens than any of the cheap 70-300s. I had the Tamron. It was garbage. Poor IQ and it broke after only 6 months of very light use. Not good value for money.

+1

If you really need the 300mm reach than I've heard the Sigma APO version is the way to go but, otherwise, go for the Canon 55-250.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. The canon 50-250 would make a great addition. The only downside I can see is it's an ef-s lens. Though it would stay primarily on the rebel, it would be nice if it were compatible with the 1D. I'll think it over but at least you gave me another possible choice I hadn't considered before.

Aye, the Canon 70-300mm IS USM is a pretty good lens. Just a bit more expensive when compared to the other ones listed above. Still, like Kauffman said, can't go wrong with it.

Hi, I also have the 70-300mm IS USM and I really like it. Mine is a sigma, but I amnow considering the 55-250mm or the 18-200mm. I`m undecided like you, best ofluck in choosing.

I will chime in and also agree that if you are looking for the 70-300 range look at canons 70-300IS (not the DO). decent lens for the price.

Everyone seems to hate the Tamron 70-300, but I don't see why! Lol, I've had this lens for 2 or 3 months now, and I think it's pretty good. It's the only lens I've ever had apart from the 18-55 kit lens that came with my 450D, which I bought at the same time. Although I've had no experience prior to using this lens, it's been very handy to have with me; here's a few shots I've taken with it:

Thanks! :)

As I say, it's the only lens I've ever used bar my kit lens, so I wouldn't know if it's any worse than, say, Canon's equivalent, but it's been pretty good to me.

We'll see if it falls apart in a few months though, lol...

Thanks for posting the pic's guys, it's always nice to see the gear in use.
I am leaning toward's the Tamron 70-300 at under $150.00 and probably pick up the Canon 50-250 for my daughter's 30D.
Thanks for everyones suggestions, this is by far the best place on the net for getting help or info when I need it.
