Nice shots. I looked at the firs 2 and thought "Dang what nice light" then the sun came out

I had really harsh lighting this weekend too. Too bad you just can't wish in some cloud cover.

It's hard to deal with that midday sun, but you did pretty good with it.

Wow, really nice shots!

Theron, you got some good stuff there under difficult conditions. The only thing you can really do (other than getting your exposures as close as possible, obviously) is to play with your in camera contrast settings if shooting jpegs. That can help in harsh light a bit. Well done either way.

I find that harsh lighting can produce overcontrasty images when the sun is at your back and washed out images when the subject is backlit so it really depends on which side you're shooting. Not trying to be vague, it just depends on the situation.

I have my in camera contrast set to "-1" (in "Parameters") and generally leave it there.

Check your histograms when you're shooting in high contrast situations like this and see if you're getting blown highlights and lost shadow detail in the same shots (the histogram will be spilling over at both ends).

Setting the in-camera contrast lower will generally tighten up the (dynamic) range. It also helps to keep the sun behind you as much as possible so you have fewer shots with partial shadows on faces (and subjects in general).

This is one of the best tips I have tried on my 20D. Since I have used this with great success, I am keenly aware of the issue, so I see a lot of pics posted that could benefit from this advice.

In fact, I think I even discussed this with Theron a while back.

Thanks for the tips. With the AYSO soccer season starting around the corner, I sure will put these to practice. I had tried to combat this problem by playing with EV adjustments, without much success. I never thought about the contrast adjustment.
