But does the spot metering really spot meter? Considering the 400D doesn't have a spot metering circle built in.

Any hacks out there to enable spot metering on a 20D that you know of?

yes it really is spot metering. you get results different from partial metering. (smaller metering spot) a

Did the hack on my XTi. Everything appears to work except for finding the shutter count. I got the stdout.txt file, but there was nothing in it about 'Release'.

I don't understand this. It's not making your sensor more light sensitive, it's just raising the exposure using software, just like moving the exposure slider in photoshop/your choice of software.

I don't think it's simply boosting 1600 to 3200 in software. the hacker who made this just enabled ISO 3200 which was deliberately disabled. the hacker also attempted to enable ISO 4000 and above, but that made the image black and full of vertical lines as though the sensor couldn't handle it. If it was entirely software, ISO 4000 would have worked too.
of course. besides the ISO 3200, you also get to fine tune your ISO at lower levels, which is a good thing: 80/100/125/160/200/250/320/400/500/640/800/1000/1250/1600/2000/2500/3200
