Bear in mind that if your camera is under warranty, this hack will void it!

Sounds sweet though (just got rid of mine but might not have if this hack had been out)

Are you sure this will void the warranty? From what I have read, it doesn't change anything permanently in the camera, as it states if you put a regular card back in, everything goes back to normal. I am curious. Don't want to void my warranty.

If you are that afraid of the warranty issue, just keep the latest Canon firmware around, and load it up before sending in your camera, but like others state, it is not a permanent part of the firmware code.

I've spent a fair deal of time on the CHDK website (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK (external link)) searching for some kind of lightning-catcher fo my 50D. The way it works is to make use of a recognised filename on the memory card. When it sees that filename it executes it upon booting the camera. The CHDK is patched into the camera's firmware safely. There are no modifications made to the firmware. If something goes wrong, pull the card, format it and bung it back in the camera. At the very worst, you may need to pull the battery. No changes are made to the camera's firmware. This piece of kit is as about as safe as you can get. The only reasons that I haven't done it yet are that...

A) my A 590 hasn't turned up yet...
B) my 50D doesn't turn up in the list of hacks.

Otherwise, I'd be enjoying movie and zebra mode right now.

I don't think it's simply boosting 1600 to 3200 in software. the hacker who made this just enabled ISO 3200 which was deliberately disabled. the hacker also attempted to enable ISO 4000 and above, but that made the image black and full of vertical lines as though the sensor couldn't handle it. If it was entirely software, ISO 4000 would have worked too.
of course. besides the ISO 3200, you also get to fine tune your ISO at lower levels, which is a good thing: 80/100/125/160/200/250/320/400/500/640/800/1000/1250/1600/2000/2500/3200

Even on the 30D, the sensor only goes to ISO 1600, and to achieve 3200 it's done in software. Expanded ISO is not the same as native ISO, and expanded ISO is done in software. And your examples of 1/3rd stop ISO is the same way. An ISO 125 shot is an ISO 100 shot brightened a third of a stop using software. An iso 640 shot is an ISO 800 shot darkened using software.

Who still has a warranty on a 400D?

But, CHDK doesn't invalidate warranties, anyway. Pull the card, and CHDK is gone.

use HxD : http://mh-nexus.de/en/downloads.php?product=HxD (external link) run as administrator, goto extras -> options -> security -> uncheck "open disk as readonly by default", then open CF card using the 5th button (cd, floppy and HDD icon) in the toolbar, then carefully write "EOS_DEVELOP" at 0x47 and "BOOTDISK" at 0x5C. save and exit.

Quote from the website...

the 1000D uses vxworks like the 400D.

strings:
"host:/tornado2.2/target/proj/juno/default/vxWorks"
ROM:FF810008 aCopyright19992 DCB "Copyright 1999-2001 ARM Limited",0xA
ROM:FF810008 DCB "Copyright 1999-2001 Wind River Systems, Inc."

sig also work fine Wink

and the code also gets loaded to 0x1900 like with the 400D

ROM:FF8100DC MOV R12, SP
ROM:FF8100E0 STMFD SP!, {R4,R11,R12,LR,PC}
ROM:FF8100E4 SUB R11, R12, #4
ROM:FF8100E8 MOV R4, R0
ROM:FF8100EC LDR R3, =0x37840
ROM:FF8100F0 SUB R2, R3, #0x1900
ROM:FF8100F4 MOV R3, R2,LSR#2
ROM:FF8100F8 LDR R0, =off_FFD51840
ROM:FF8100FC MOV R1, #0x1900
ROM:FF810100 MOV R2, R3
ROM:FF810104 BL sub_FF81011C
ROM:FF810108 MOV R0, R4
ROM:FF81010C BL usrInit
ROM:FF810110 LDMDB R11, {R4,R11,SP,PC}

i allready compared the dump with a 1.0.8 400D dump and its near the same. thats why it shouldnt be a big problem to port it to the 1000D.

Just updated mine now... it looks werid having ISO 3200 on my camera, but as a plus side it does do the half ISOs so if i want to use a bit extra up on 1600, say 2000 i can! Brilliant.

I would also like advice here. Never used a hex editor before and I don't know where to write it.
