Our neighbor has a new puppy, and in her fenced yard the puppy was digging a hole (normal). So the dog's owner goes outside to tell the dog to stop, and notices something in the pinestraw. It was a little den with wild baby bunnies (three of them). We don't know the entire situation, but my wife and her friend (the puppy's owner) called the nearest wildlife rehabilitation center, and they said to pick them up. Contrary to popular myth, you actually can pick them up and the mother won't abandon them.
The wildlife expert said to check their tummies to find out if they are nursing properly. He said the mother rabbit will only come back once per night to feed them for five minutes. At eight to ten days they will leave the nest with the mother and most likely become snake food, or hop around and become happy little bunnies.
So my wife and her friend have to check them again (they are burried under pinestraw and a little dirt) to see if they are gaining weight or not. If the mother rabbit doesn't come back, then my wife and friend are going to take them to the rehabilitation center. There they'll each have a 65% chance of survival. It's best if their mother comes back each night (provided the mother isn't in the stomach of a hawk right now).
Sorry for the poor quality. I'm a beginning photographer and only had about five minutes to take the photos. They haven't been processed. I'll probably sharpen them up a bit later.
Enjoy.
