I actually had to desaturate the blues a little, the sky was amazing that day.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

this is my goal.... to obtain photos like this.

So you exposed for the sky/trees, how do you know how much flash to use? I have started to dapple in ocf but just a tiny bit.... I know how to expose for the background, just don't understand how to set my flash. I heard the 580 exll picks the same exposure as what your camera has metered but would like to learn how to do it myself.

Great shot.
Thanks Kathleen

Fantastic shot! I need to start using my AB's outside. Were you using the Vagabond?

Kathleen. First things first, you cant take this shot, at least this shot when I took this shot, with the 580exII. It takes a very powerful flash to "overpower" the sunlight on a bright afternoon. But you can probably do it a bit later in the day. Its simple with a flashmeter, a bit more challenging without but doable. All you do is take a test shot to establish your base exposure at the shutter speed you will use. Because I was using the alien bee flash I was limited to 1/250 of a second, ISO 100 at roughly f/8. This basically gave me the sky I wanted and the dark grass in the shadow. All I had to do then was add enough flash to illuminate my subject. I was probably at 3/4 power on the bee in a fairly inefficient softbox. You can try the 580 (manual full power) without a diffuser and see what you get. I think for you to have much success you are going to need to let the sun go down a bit.

Yes, I picked up an older vagabond I and this was only my second time out with it. I cant wait to do more but I have trouble getting willing subjects having gone through the list of friends and family already.

Thanks for commenting.

Did you darken the corners in PS? I like that effect.

Yeah, I used the lens correction vignette in PS CS3. The part of the range we were shooting on was a little ratty so did a pretty bold vignette with that then layered it over the original and masked it so the corners and the bottom were a bit darker. I was trying to hide the bad grass and keep the subject a bit brighter in the middle wihout being too obvious about it. I see too much heavy handed vignette work on the forum, always gotta check that I'm not doing it myself.
